I have a wanted ad here. This morning I got a private conversation message from a brand new member saying he knew a guy that had one and gave me the email address. I contacted the guy and he sent me 4 photos and gave me a price that anybody looking for one would easily pay. This has all the classic signs of a scam. So now I go back to the conversation and it's been deleted. So I guess it's a scam.

It's been deleted
I deleted one this morning. It was kevinmatt27. He had posted on 4 different threads. Only 1 was reported. If you get a suspicious PM, report it. We can't get rid of scammers unless you do.

That is the classic style of text you will get from a scammer on here saying they 'know a guy who has the exact part you are looking for'

Scammer text 101. We have posted many warnings about this activity ....difficult to stop completely, but we do catch most before you guys see them.

hey, I hear if you become a staff member you get free beer for life...is that true?

same thing happened to me also, same guy as shown above and gave me this contact email for the "last 1 he had ". he referenced my WTB thread for a Modified max intake..

A friend and I were approached with a VERY similar posting, including a couple pickups and lots of other attractive stuff at a-little-too-good prices.
Started to stink when they wanted down payment before we could see anything besides pictures, and couldn't get a location we could lay hands on the merch.
Advanced scam story. Does that make it scam 102, or 202?

can the mods see private messages?

not that I bad mouthed any of them

Yep it checks a lot of scam boxes:
-very nice merch at excellent price (-60%)
-selling for friend/relative.
-sexy photo of female seller.
-seller not home/out of town/not at location of merch.
-and of course, the ultimate deal breaker, deposit required to hold item/hold place/mark pending.
-sympathetic story about family member/friend.

Full disclosure, I did message them, because in my haste (greed) I did not see the bit about the deposit. They instantly messaged me back with full details of 2 cars I inquired about. Another odd thing.

When I asked for photos I got a bunch of garbage. When I asked when I could see them I was told I would have to leave a deposit first.

At that point I reported it to FB as a scam. Today the listing is gone, for whatever reason. Maybe FB took it down, maybe the scammer made some dough and moved on.

The thing that seems unusual for a scammer is that they stated right on the ad that they require an upfront deposit. That takes balls

My point is that if you intend to do business on the internet, you better have your head on a swivel.

The story we got was dad passed away, unloading merch the son didn't need or want. He was willing to take any kind of deposit (of course it was refundable, lol), but he was out of town on business, wouldn't be back for a couple weeks, but he was taking lots of deposits for stuff, so if we wanted something specific, we had to hurry.
Stunk to high heaven. Eventually. We were suckered in, for a little while. Until..... we needed to pay for something we couldn't see or touch, or even know where it was.
