Need electrical advice for an electrically-challenged guy

How many miles or how much time did you have it running with things being that way under the hood?
I ask just because I'm thinking if there was some decent running time that makes me think the weird configuration may not be directly at fault and it is just one component failed or a connection opened up.

I'm in the same boat and have taken the same steps in just getting it drivable. I try to limit real downtime and make my projects drivable ones. I didn't pull my harness off the car to check it since it I go with the least disturbance approach.
Good luck, I'm kind of local, maybe one day we can compare ugly engine bays.
That would be great

well when I got the car in 2018, it started up and ran just fine. I reconnected the tach and I had to repair a few electrical connections but nothing major..... so pretty much nothing since 2018. Guess I was on borrowed time

Ok I had some time to get the wiring harnesses disconnected from the firewall and out of the car. I left the one in that goes to the headlights - they've never given me any issue... if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Now I'm just waiting to find time to check the continuity of the wires and repair any damage.

Many times it's the connection right at the firewall that needs attention.

Update: absolutely nothing has changed. I haven’t done s*** with the car since January. How sad.

I’ve had a lot going on and I had some other higher priority projects I had to take care of - along with work and all the other things life throws at you.

Good news is my 2.5 year old daughter has really taken an interest in turning wrenches with me. Our next project is changing the oil on my Duramax then we’re going to tackle the charger together. Stay tuned.

I missed the double BOB RENTON post. He was really making the point!

Not exactly sure what you are trying to say??? Please explain.......

Before read the rest of post…becarefull with this diagram being posted for pre 74 or 75 cars (depending on body) because this is for lates 70s, where the ballast bypass didn’t came anymore from ign switch but from starter relay, with an specific prong for it. This is not the case on the car being talked.

This is the relay used for that diagram

While pre 74 or 75 cars use this (or even earliers without the ground terminal from NSS or Clutch pedal)

In any case still the wiring for the ECU remains essentially the same, just the legend info will unmatch the car by the ballast terminal missed on Starter relay, but coming from ign2 circuit instead (brown wire)
