I'm in the process of pulling the 904 out of my 72 Coronet Wagon to replace it. At the rear of the unit by the yoke is this big round metal thing on a bracket. It's a pretty significant chunk of metal. Anyone know what it's for, and if it needs to go back on the 42RH I'm installing?

Vibration damper. Not needed, they were trying to make the cars smoother and quieter.

Is that all it does? Almost looks like the E-brake cable is curved around it. Does it need to be on the tranny for proper tension?

You could likely fabricate a hook from the crossmember to the cable to do the same thing.

There were several 'problem' pumps in the refinery that had vibration problems mainly from other equipment in the system that also created vibrations and those pumps had a weight hanging off of them. The minor vibrations from 'other' equipment would sometimes affect pumps etc that would not vibrate when running by themselves. @halfafish If you are trying to reduce the weight of the car, take it off and then drive the car to see if you notice any differences....

Haha, this car is about a 4500 pound pig with me, my sweetie, the tool bag, and a full tank of gas. Shaving weight might be nice but I'd have to get a lot of it off to make a difference. This question came about because I'm swapping the 904 out for a 42RH and saw the thing but couldn't figure it out. I shall put it in the paperweight department when I get it removed.

Well, I took a car that was 3370 down to 2950 without spending much money.....glass hood was the only fairly large expenditure but it was mainly to replace the bad factory hood. The car still retained the factory AC system at the 2950 weight. And you will love the 42RH!
