So I recently had a couple fan bolts come loose and dug themselves into the radiator. Glen Ray radiator said he could fix the damage and id only lose about 6 tubes out of 265. Whats everyone's thought on that? And he said he won't charge me to fix it since I bought it from him back in 2019.

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain if he can fix it for $0. That's a pretty nice offer after 6 years of use. And somehow I doubt that Glen Ray would offer to fix it, especially on their dime if they weren't confident that the radiator would function properly afterwards.

Good point. 1 shop local to me said if its a simple fix they would charge me around $140, or a worst case scenario they would have to recore it for $1000.
 
It does. But trying to find a box is the hard part. Every place I've called said they don't have anything that size or they break them down. And im cheap, I don't want to buy a box cause that would defeat the free cost lol.
 
Look in recycle bins behind shopping center for cardboard boxes. And you can fabricate a box with either an oversize box, or combining smaller boxes. Done so plenty of times shipping parts.
 
I had a floor jack slip off my K frame. Found out quickly the alum radiator is rather lacking as a jack point. My ego was the most damaged.
I thought the rad was worthless, but it got repurposed as a rad for engine stand and works well and is a constant reminder to never let that happen again. If nothing else and you build an engine test stand, that problem is solved.
Its definitely worth fixing IMO.

Do I see raw copper exposed on the fins? I was assuming for no real reason other than slight pic overexposure it was an Alum Rad.

Its a copper radiator, no aluminum radiator for me.
 
Copper is indeed a wonderful material, accepting of course, its heavy and costly
With today's copper scrap values, your damaged radiator scrapped might just pay for a new aluminum radiator if you wanted or needed to go that route. :eek:

Well I was going to send it to Glen Ray radiator cause he wouldn't charge me anything to fix it. But now im thinking of trying a local radiator shop that's highly recommended. And hopefully I won't have to take out a loan to pay for the repairs.
 
I would think copper would be fairly easy to solder plug the damaged tubes once the tanks are removed. The damage in your pic would be hardly noticeable with a fresh coat of black paint. Is it heavy to ship?
 
A copper rad is always going to be weaker than an alum rad because the tanks are soft-soldered to the core....& soft solder is not very strong.

I don't know about that. I was told a aluminum radiator doesn't hold up as good as a copper radiator.
