Best way to remove 4 speed trans

When remove the trans crossmember the whole thing will tip down in the back. Be careful with the harbor freight trans jack. Coming down they have a tendency to just drop. Keep fingers and any other body parts out of scissors area just in case. Once trans is out modify mounting plate for shifter, ie shorten the top of it and round it off a bit to clear the pinch weld as it goes back in.
Ps flywheel is also very heavy. Keep control of it as it comes off.

Use your horse to pull the car over on it's side then It's real easy access to the trans . . . that's how my dad did it with his Studebaker!

Also back in the day you put a bottle jack under the motor to tip it down to get clearance for the tranny, it is best to remove at least the radiator shroud, (and probably the radiator) for clearance for the fan as the back of the motor drops. As stated above, real men don't use a jack, even on a Mopar. Muncies are much lighter.

I just took out the fan and fan clutch, should be fine, not running a shroud. The 7 blade fan works great and is very tight to radiator. Runs 180 all day long

Just touching base with all of you. Thank you for the kind advice. Aluminum pad was not removed and came out like butter. Putting it in might be a different story. So I’ll probably remove it before I put it back in being that I stripped 2 of the Allen bolts anyways.

No, don't release the front motor mounts, the jack is to help support the rear. Yes, you can probably let the engine oil pan rest on the steering drag link. Watch the fan/shroud to radiator clearance .

Thank you for the help as well. Yes, I took off fan and clutch, not running a shroud. Motor is just touching drag link and I have a jack and wood blocks just rear of drag link supporting pan/engine as well.

Thank you for the help, just took out trans, like you suggested. I’ll be removing and modifying shifter bracket as well after a get it off this weekend.
