Hello, I saw this Crane big block cam in his garage and was curious to see if anyone here could identify it and if you knew the specs.

I read Crane 278 2 NC.

The owner had in a 440 that was in the car when he bought it but he didn’t know the specs.
Thanks.

HMV: Hydraulic Max-Velocity

Maybe you can locate an old catalog on the www.

I get this from the master catalog. However, it's missing the MV but also its saying 3 bolt cam gear. Also I wonder if NC means nitrate coating.

Good midrange torque and HP, good idle, daily performance usage, mild bracket racing, 3000-3400 cruise RPM ,9.5 to 10.75 compression ratio advised. Also mild supercharged.

H-278-2 1800-5600 683801* 99278-16b 222 278 114 2 40 .000 .467683802*a, b 99378-16*c 234 290 56 (2) .000 .494

This is the catalog link.

Here is a little more info I'm digging up. https://www.cranecams.com.au/pdfs/masterlisting.pdf looks to be an older catalog.

HMV HMV Hydraulic series intended for mid-range torque and street use, also fuel economy. Designed to make maximum use of .842” diameter tappets.

It's a Chevy grind on a Mopar stick.

Maybe I'm missing something but I can't find the cam in those catalogs.

Thanks. It looks pretty mild.
But based on numbers, seems to be a good small step over the Magnum. Good replacement option for it if you ask me.

Keep it around just in case you want to sell and I want to buy LOL. Since my storaging place in Venezuela was took by thiefs, I lost my factory NOS (real NOS, NOT the MP version) Magnum camshaft

I can put you in touch with the guy that has it.
Send me a PM if you want.

With all the health problems with my mom right now in Venezuela I can’t think on buy that at this moment. I hope will be solved… somehow soon. And will talk if still around.

Wondering why it appears twice the H-278-2 on the catalog with two diff PNs 683801 and 2

Is it 3 bolts gears then?
One is just the cam and the other is the cam and lifter kit.

Page 12 of the Crane catalog:

Camshaft Part Number/Emissions Code
Identifies the actual Part Number for this
camshaft. Cams sold as Cam Only (without
lifters) usually end with the numeral 1. Cam
& Lifter Kits include matching Crane lifters.
Their Part Numbers usually end in the
numeral 2. The “Emissions Code” states the
California (CARB) emissions designation for
that particular cam.

it was in one of my cars with a 440 rebuilt engine when I got the car. no low end torque hated the cam.
