Yes, the prickly pear cactus is native to the United States. It is part of the genus Opuntia, which is native only to the Americas, including the United States, Mexico, and South America. The eastern prickly pear (Opuntia humifusa) is specifically native to the lower 48 states of the United States, including areas from the East Coast to the Midwest and parts of the Great Plains

At one time, big brand names were loath to play with their name, so up until about 50 years ago, you wouldn't see something labelled 'Diet Coke', for instance, as the Coca-Cola company wouldn't tolerate the name diluted with other words. So, instead of Diet Coke, or Diet 7-Up, the companies came up with totally alternate names.
Thus, the origins of TaB, the diet cola made by Coca Cola, in reaction to other diet drinks springing to market.
Pepsi Cola had their version first, named Patio.
Instead of Diet 7-Up, we had Like.
And the RC Cola company already had Diet Rite back in 1958.
