You have a broken tooth in the ring gear, I have heard that sound a few times.

Pump up the tyres to max pressure and go for a blast down to McDonalds on the Waikato Expressway and back - problem will be solved.

Grab the drive shaft at the rear u-joint and push up and down and in and out. You don't want any play there.

Not far from me...however putting on jack-stands will help narrow down the search. If you get an assistant to rev the car up and down gently, you should be able to trace the noise.Thanks for the offer but i think i'll be ok once i put the car on stands. The cars in Ramarama

Just please make sure that the car is stable on the stands. I know a guy who was dragged under his Mark 3 Zephyr many years ago....on his back, and by his chin.Mind you...same guy used a set of vice-grips for a makeshift steering wheel on a gravel road.
