Hi B-Body friends,

I was asked by some friends to post a running thread updating as the offseason goes on my Charger so I figured I’d share it here if that’s alright. It’s a drag car, 68 Charger that’s undergoing a serious transformation this offseason that includes body work and paint, roll cage and weight loss, along with a potential 440. Currently has a 383 / 727.

Will be updating this thread as projects are completed and progress continues. Thanks for following along! Social media updates by searching: Kohrt Racing

Body work and paint is the first project. Body work is extensive as it has hail damage from sitting outside for 30 years. The original red has been primer’ed over.

Plan is to use Summit Racings epoxy primer after getting it to bare metal in most places. Then fill before sealing and going with a single stage with a clear over it. My plan is to paint with a $1000 budget. Currently I’m at $600 with everything except for paint. For guns, I plan to use TCP global’s kit including a 1.4mm and 1.7mm. It also comes with a handy 1.0mm for the jambs which I do plan to paint.

I will also paint the inside of the doors, hood, trunk and possibly the engine bay as well, but not the interior. Which is getting a total rework in its own way.

Metal work begins shortly with not only several patches but a 10-pt roll cage!

How serious are you about racing? Full season points type thing? Don't be afraid to talk to people about sponsoring a paint job maybe.
Or a rollbar...

Shelving paint and body for some metal work, first up is the roll cage.

Going with a 10pt and an 8.50 cert. swing door bars. I find approaching big projects with three focus’s to always lean on are solid foundational thoughts. For the cage I wanted safety, premium visibility for racing and easy in and out.

The main hoop was first up and thankfully, nailed the bends on the first stick. Chromoly 1 5/8th is actually fairly cheap but I have no interest wasting tubing. With a good foundation to build off, the dash runners are next.

The drivers side is bent and tacked in. Invisible from the side of the vehicle, the bar is neat and unobtrusive. Tucked in to the headliner cavity, the bar provides protection without distraction.

Ordering welds from top to bottom is generally the most appropriate way around it. Cutting holes in the floor to drop the cage through is a nifty tip to weld the top of the bars before bringing it back up and finishing the welds. I plan to weld 100% and use gussets. Swinging door bars and more work on the passenger side dash bar is next!
