Going to be changing the coil pickup on my 70 RR, planning to do it in the car, do I need to get to TDC before I pull the reluctor off or is there no chance of anything getting off? Thanks, wire on the outside of dizzy got melted unfortunately and can’t be salvaged. The motor is a stock 1978 440

The reluctor can be installed two ways, there are two locator grooves for the roll pin.. Those grooves are marked or right or left hand rotation... Pay attention to that & you'll be fine... Also, be careful the little roll pin that goes in the groove can drop into the lower portion of the distributor where the advance weights are and it's a PITA to retrieve it...

The engine does not need to be positioned at TDC or otherwise to change the reluctor and/or pickup coil in the distributor.

The reluctor has two possible positions that it can be installed. It has two spots for the locating pin to align for the two positions, and should be marked on top with two arrows.

Make a note how yours is installed and install the same, or align as follows:
- For the 440, install the reluctor with the alignment pin in the slot in the position with the arrow circled as shown in Fig. 2 in the following image:

There should be two wires coming from the dist. Measure the resistance between the wires. Should be 100-400 ohms. Then measure from one of the wires to the dist body. Should be infinity. If both readings check out ok, p/up is ok & does not need replacing. Where the wires are burned: slice some plastic tubing & fit over the burned section. Fill with neutral cure silicon to hold in place; when sil has cured, check resistance readings again.

Thank you very much!

I’m was definitely gonna try to fix the wiring, only issue I see is the rubber grommet the wires go through the body of the dist has been damaged aswell. I’d have to cut the grommet up to expose the wires as it’s kind of one big chunk at the moment. Do you think that’s worth trying to fix? I don’t think I can save the grommet

Thank you! I really appreciate your help, I’m gonna take it on this weekend!

Just change the pickup. I would pull the distributor to change it. Much easier to find a lost screw of the 1/32 roll pin.

Hops , who makes a decent pickup today

With all this unreliable overseas junk on the market , I thought only the original Mopar pickup was the one to buy , if you can find them nos
