I service our bird feeder every morning - a quarter of a suet block and a pile of seed. Dang sparrows are way overpopulated and just make a mess. I hung a big plastic planter tray under it to catch the suet they hammer off but then they get down in the tray and kick the crap out. But we enjoy the Redbirds , Mocking Birds, Carolina Wrens, Bluebirds, small woodpeckers, etc.
Tuesday I stepped out on the porch with the bird food and turned to walk down the steps to the feeder and suddenly realized there was a huge hawk sitting on the edge of a raised flower bed next to the feeder about 15’ away. I froze and he just turned and kind of gave me a once over and the turned back to staring at the back yard. I thought, well OK, let me just give you a little time to finish your business so I turned and went back inside. I figured maybe he would take out a couple of sparrows. We could afford to lose a couple. About 20 minutes later I looked out and didn’t see him so I went back out with the food turned to the steps and there he was. He had just moved down about 5 ft to the end of the raised bed out of sight from the window. Again, he just gave me a baleful look and proceeded to ignore me. So again, my apologies and I retreated back inside. After about 30 minutes he left.
