Bird Nerds

I service our bird feeder every morning - a quarter of a suet block and a pile of seed. Dang sparrows are way overpopulated and just make a mess. I hung a big plastic planter tray under it to catch the suet they hammer off but then they get down in the tray and kick the crap out. But we enjoy the Redbirds , Mocking Birds, Carolina Wrens, Bluebirds, small woodpeckers, etc.

Tuesday I stepped out on the porch with the bird food and turned to walk down the steps to the feeder and suddenly realized there was a huge hawk sitting on the edge of a raised flower bed next to the feeder about 15’ away. I froze and he just turned and kind of gave me a once over and the turned back to staring at the back yard. I thought, well OK, let me just give you a little time to finish your business so I turned and went back inside. I figured maybe he would take out a couple of sparrows. We could afford to lose a couple. About 20 minutes later I looked out and didn’t see him so I went back out with the food turned to the steps and there he was. He had just moved down about 5 ft to the end of the raised bed out of sight from the window. Again, he just gave me a baleful look and proceeded to ignore me. So again, my apologies and I retreated back inside. After about 30 minutes he left.

Great shots, Mike!

I have two suet + seed feeders on shepard's hooks and a window seed tray feeder along with a 14" heated bird bath. My peeps love my backyard lol

Lately been getting a rather boisterous Bluejay going for the seed in the window tray.

I think we have the same umbrella, Mario! LOL

We have multiple feeders in our yard. Suet, peanuts, sunflower, Hummingbird, Oriole, and now a Bird Buddy given to us by our daughter. It has a camera in it. We also have a heated bird bath. Water is one of the biggest attractions to getting birds in the yard. We get all kinds of different birds. Catbirds like the jelly at the Oriole feeder. We get Red Bellied Woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpeckers, Downy Woodpeckers, Northern Flickers...it's a seemingly endless list. Occasionally a bird crashes into one of our windows. I sometimes pick them up and help them recover after ringing their bell. Here are some shots from our yard.

This Hummingbird hit a window and was stunned. It was a cold spring day, so I picked him up and warmed him up in my hand until he felt good enough to fly off.

This Downy Woodpecker rang his bell when he hit the window. He eventually recovered and flew off.

This is what the Bird Buddy looks like followed by some shots from ours. Pretty neat.

A friend of mine used to breed doves, but he had to give it up. Said it was hard on his knees! LOL
My post was inspired by a funny incident where I once worked. I was a supervisor at a small factory where most employees were hired on recommendations from friends and family. One of our new engineers must have been hired this way, because, after a few months of working at the plant, the H.R. Director discovered that she had no job application form on file for him. She requested he fill out an application form, after the fact, for her records. He thought this was hilarious, so he filled out a tongue-in-cheek one for her.
Under Previous Employment, he entered, Cuddy Farms Inc. This was a large, local chicken farming operation, that supplied McDonalds, at the time.
Under Job Description, he entered, Chicken Breeder.
Under Reason for Leaving Previous Employment, he entered, My knees got sore.
The lady H.R. Director was less than amused! True story!
