Green Bearing Question

I lost one of those on my 10-second drag car after a few seasons of racing. Only then my close buddy had one weld to the axle tube. I had to go from Rochester New York down to Harrisburg Pennsylvania in with a come along pull the car up onto the trailer. The back tire was locked up because of the green bearing. Nothing like good old tapered roller bearings. Nothing beats them. They are indestructible green bearings. Another story, Axle housing was no good after that

The inner race on my tapered roller bearing spun on the axle. Got so hot it changed the metallurgy of the race, and reduced the OD of the axle shaft.

No symptoms of anything, not out of adjustment. Discovered when I pulled both axles to check everything out before a long trip.

Never saw anything like it.

Stuff happens.

Were they packed with grease or dry? The bearing would have to completely seize for that to happen and/or the axle would have to be too small for a press fit. Usually the factory tapered bearings will self destruct at 60-70k miles if they are not regreased .

Greased, not dry.

10:35 - I initially thought the brown grease was due to rust, or water getting in, but there was zero moisture, only discolored grease.

24:30 - again, I state rust at first, but then correct myself and say burnt.

No water or moisture in the rear at all, full of clean gear oil.

Passenger side had literally just began to leak gear oil before I took it apart.

Driver side was the side with the spun bearing race and discolored grease, no gear oil made it past the inner seal, no grease made it past the outer seal.

I put thousands of miles on this car before taking it apart at the beginning of the year.
