hey people, new guy here from virginia, although i dont own an old mopar, but do have an 06 ram 1500 4x4 with the hemi, ive always loved old mopars and i think the 68-69 chargers are the hottest lookin car to ever roll down the road. a buddy of mine just got a 1968 charger that done up very very well like the general lee. i know its a 68 and not a 69 but... its still nice. my question is, the 383 in it has some problems and he bought a new crate 383, being hes not very mechanically inclined and ive never pulled an engine from a mopar, is there anything i should be aware of or look for??? ive pulled countless ford and chevy motors, i know dont throw rocks :(, but glad to be here and i appreciate all the info i can get to help get the general up and running

Engine removal is pretty much like the Fords and GM rear wheel drives....but is there a reason for pulling countless Ford and Chevy motors?? :D

just like they say mopar or no car ;) . anyone know how the flex plates unbolt on the 727 tranny? most furds and chubbys have access cover to get to the bolts do the 727 have something similar??

Yup, at the bottom...but I always pull my trans and motor out together. If the engine is sick, what's up with the trans?

Welcome! I can't think of any thing special that is required to pull the 383. Post pictures please.

welcome, just basically pull the motor out the same way you would do any other motor

thanks guys, yeah my buddys car is in real good shape, but the motor wont hold much oil pressure and gets hot real quick so he decided to buy crate motor for it. can anyone tell me firing order on the 383?? also is #1 first drivers side ??

Welcome aboard!

wow same as a small block chubby , thanks. also are the 383 internal or extrernal balance? hes getting all new parts and needs a new harmonic balancer and wanna make sure he gets the right one. also is the key for the balancer just a straight stock square key or does it take one of those half moon shaped keys? i really appreciate all the help. supposed to put the engine in in next 2 weeks so ill post of lots of pics!

oh questions guys, im understanding that the there were rear sump and center sump oil pans, rear being used in trucks, so does that mean the oil pump is located in a different spot or is it just a different pickup tube? sorry for all the questions guys but i know im asking the most knowlegeable people !:)

No sweat blacdog2

Factory cast crank 383 externally, and.......................square key. I'd ask mopar on the new crate engine balancing. No clue. Good luck on your engine install.....Oil pump is in the same location-bolted on front lower drivers side of the engine

hey thanks, the engine he bought came from a place that rebuilds engines. so on oil pump only differnce is the pickups right? guess i need to call the company he got engine from and find out lil more info.

To be honest I'm not fimiliar with truck sump/pick up tubes and location, but the oil pump always mounts in the same location up front on the B/RB engines

Yuppers.............. 383 Forged crank will be internal

Article from mopar muscle for your viewing pleasure I had floating around:

Chrysler's "B" and "RB" engine crankshafts have two basic stroke dimensions. The "B" engine crankshaft uses a 3.380 inch stroke and the "RB" engine uses a 3.750 inch stroke. Main journal size also differs between the "B" and "RB" engines. The "B" engine uses a 2.625 inch main journals, the "RB" uses 2.750 journals. Both engines share the same 2.380 inch rod journals.
All early crankshafts are steel forgings. In 1971 Chrysler used a cast crank in low performance 383 engines. The use of cast iron crankshafts in 440's began in 1972. All cast cranks and certain forged steel cranks are externally balanced. These require the use of specially balanced harmonic dampeners, torque converters and flywheels. The appropriate components must be used to ensure that the reciprocating assembly is in balance. If an internally balanced crank is used with an external balanced converter or dampener (or vise- versa) a severe out of balance condition will occur. Externally balanced crankshafts can be internally balanced by adding a heavy metal called Mallory metal to the crank throws. 440's equipped with 3x2 barrel carbs were also externally balanced to compensate for heavier rods. They require the use of externally balanced dampeners and converters or flywheels.

Your buddies best bet is to buy the Dodge Service Manual for the car via CD or reprint (readily available)...... I'm sure he could use it for all other sorts of information as well.
