I have that problem also on my 72. The only thing I can is the right side frnder tab that bolts to the firewall has cracked in half but everything else is connected.
I know on 71 & 72 the gauge cluster comes out just by a couple of screws and dropping the column from its mount. The wood grain on the passenger side however is more involved and I believe the dash has to come out. Of course if I am wrong I hope someone will correct me on that.
I had one of the clear filters just before my carb. and had the same problem. After I relocated the filter closer to the pump and changed it out to a metal inline filter I haven't had any problems.
