My grandparents bought a new 63 Dodge Polara when I was a kid, and of course I fell in love with it.

When I turned 16 I tried to buy it from them. Even though they didn't drive it much grandma wanted to keep the car.

Over the next 20 years I would ask them if they were ready to get rid of that old Dodge. Finally when I was about 25 grandma said " billy when I'm done driving it you can have it" I was elated.

My grandma passed away 4 years ago, and grandpa told me today that he stopped driving and wants to sell the car. Honestly this gives everyone in the family that may want the car a chance to own it.

So I need help to determine the value of this car.

It is going to break my heart if this car ends up out of the family.

Details: Car is a 63 Polara 2 door hard top.

318 and push button auto
99,000 miles always garaged
white with read interior, bucket seats
not a dent or scratch.

I don"t have any pics of the car but it looks just like this one

You cannot let that car get out of the family. If it's as clean and unmolested as the picture you've created in my mind, I'd say $10K wouldn't be unreasonable. Also, they're only original once. You may have a survivor on your hands that (in some people's opinon) shouldn't be altered - but preserved. Let us know what happens.

Thanks for your response.

It is indeed 100% original, right down to the factory hub caps.

I called the bank because I don't have enough cash to buy it outright. they said $7,900. But he was a bit vague about where he got that number.

It seems as though there were not a lot of 63 2 dr hart tops produced. Not many for sale, at least not right now.

I will keep it completely original.

Car loooks WWWWWAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY to MINT to have 100k:icon_rambo:You have to have it,who else in the family wanth the car,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,my long lost cousin:idea1::icon_rambo:

Whooaaa, Hemi... He said: "I don"t have any pics of the car but it looks just like this one".

But he does paint a pretty picture of it. :)

Why not have a heart to heart talk with Gramps and tell him that your grandmother promised it to you and how much the car means to you. Then ask him if he has to sell it then how much would he want for it from you.

Hard to say without pics of actual car but $5-7k sounds about right...

Thanks, we have talked about it while grandma was still alive. One of my uncles put pressure on my grandma while she was still alive about giving it to me.

She came to me in tears saying that she felt she had to give it to him. It really bothered me that he did that to her. I let her know that no matter I wouldn't hold it against them.

In the meantime my uncle died too. So now it's a matter of his kids and my aunt thinking it would not be fair to everyone else to just have the car for free.

The fact is no one in the family is attached to that car like me. Even my mom and dad just look at it like an old car.

it would be a shame if you didnt end up with the car.

I'm with Joe on this:idea1::icon_rambo:

It's sad to say but families have been torn apart for far less than a cool old Mopar. The fact that grandpa is still alive should give you a bit of leverage. I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and assume that no one else in the family is really passionate about this car. So it may get driven for a while until something breaks then sold off.
I really hope this saga ends well. I can't say that I know you but we all think that you deserve this car.

If anybody else in the family was to be given the car they would just sell it anyways and not enjoy the car. Tell gramps that you will give him what ever money you have now and give him the rest over time that way hopefully you end up with it. Keep us posted.

Take the loan if you can and make payments if your Grandfather wants more for the car. That will keep the family in check if anyone wants to "claim" it or sell it for profit. Should keep the peace in other words. Always a touchy subject when family gets up in years.

Tell your relatives it is none of their business. It is still grandpa's car to do as he pleases with and if he wants to give it to you he can. Sounds like the other relatives are trying to split up his assets now rather than when he is gone. He can do what he wants with it and none of them should have anything to say about his property until he is gone and THEN they can start fighting over his property depending on how he has provided in his will or trust.

These kind of things can be contentious.

I'd echo what others have said - you got to get the car. I would pay grandpa what it's worth. If some other family member steps in with more, "auction it" to the highest paying family member. That way you don't have to listen to the whining of some other relative for the next 30 years.

Maybe you can agree on a price with grandpa and then make payments?

The man at the bank is right, there aren't many of these cars left. Offer him book value and see what he says. If he wants more tell him you will pay his price IF you can make payments on the balance.

I understand how he fells about the car my uncle has my grandpa's '70 383 cuda and I would love to have it he however gave me his '78 Ford F250 before you guys start yelling I know it is a ford but this one is different grandpa bought it brand new and it has been in the family since I am restoring it but if I was to some how get the cuda I would be in heaven the cuda is either curious yellow or lemon twist I can't remember

I agree you should get the car. Talk with Grandpa about what he thinks is a fair price for the car to you, knowing what he does about your passion for the car and your history of trying to buy it, then give him his asking price. If it's more than what the bank will give, see if he will work out payments for you. I'm sorry about the situation your in! Luckily in my family, My Dad and I are the die hard Mopar lovers and everyone else is dedicated to Ford, so it's a foregone conclusion where Dad's stuff goes, no questions asked.
