My friend has a 71 440 and 727 from a 71 rv. He says it runs well and get this 30k original miles! He's asking 500.00 would this make a good turbo motor or good high hp motor?

Make sure it's a 440. Most MH's I've seen with big blocks in the early 70's had 413's. If it has the high mount water pump setup, it's probably is a 413.

Also look for stupid lookin hermerphordite bastardized subterranian heathenized boogered up water outlets in the front of the heads. If it has those, throw it in the ditch.

What Cranky says; verify if it is a 440. If the water pump is not obscuring the ID pad in front of the (2bbl) intake manifold, then it should say G 440 if it is a 440 from model year 1971. If it is casting year 1971, it could also be an H 440 for model year 1972.

Check casting numbers. Usually they are located on the side of the engine block. However, if it is an industrial engine with the additional strengthening ribs, then there will not be a casting number on the side because of these ribs. Commonly for these blocks the casting number will be located on top of the engine behind the oil sensor at the transmission mounting flange.

Check the thickness of the damper. If it is about 1 3/4", then it may have the 8-bolt steel crank with extended flange also. Judging from your post I don't think your engine has this, since the 727 fits behind it. Then the damper would be the standard 7/8" thickness with 6-bolt flange steel crank. This crank is more common and more suitable to a wide variety of applications. I don't know if there were any 440 industrial motors with the 8-bolt extended flange steel crank, but I know most of the 413 industrial motors were.

Hope this helps.

If it has the high mount water pump setup, it'll be like that....and I think you hold the record for the most misspeeeeled words in a single sentence lol

Yup, my 413 is out of a 72 RV or dump truck or whatever. Marked HT413. H =1972, T = truck/ industrial. Casting numbers are on top, right near the bell housing. Just an underbored 440, so check that id pad real good. And pull the valve covers to find out for certain what heads ya got and let everyone know before ya buy it.

For some crazy reason, the previous owner decided to keep my motor rather than throw it in the ditch. Now it has 906 heads out of a 68 (if i recall, thats what the casting numbers showed), and he put a few grand into an aftermarket crank and custom pistons. Maybe he had money to burn, i dont know.

Just an underbored 440......

Meh.....I wouldn't go that far. There's a .1325 difference in bore sizes from the 413 to the 440. Underbored 426 maybe. That's just a .0643 difference. I think the 413 would go that far, but certainly not to a 440.

Ditch fodder. lol

How'd you make that determination? If it is a 1976 model, it's certainly not a 413. Can you post some numbers of of it?

I talked to the original owner of the rv. He said it never smoked never used any oil. He believed if the kid kept it covered it would be an awesome motor. Would that 440 be a good starting point?
