I have TTI step headers 2' into 2 1/8 " into 3 1/2 collectors with H pipe and 3" exhaust run to the rear and dump at a angle...

What do you have and why just curious to know what other like..
Jim a friend in PA has 4 1/2 exhaust on his 68 Charger that is HUGE.. But he is running a 605 cu in Hemi .. :headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang:

I'm running hooker super competitions summit 2 1/2 duals their mufflers and mufflers just before the 2" factory exaust tips. Because it's a 350 hp 318 and I want it to be quiet. Figuring that I have more than 'doubled the flow of the factory exaust. Dual 2" outlets to give some back pressure. there is a balance to everything... except for the bigger is better and the chrome-go-faster folks.

x pipe is just a more modern design to achieve the same goal.if there is a real diff between the two,you would only see it on a hot motor with an exacting tune.

I'm running 2" super comps into 3 1/2" collectors. Then 3" pipes, H-pipe into 2 chamber flowmasters then 45° out. Pipes exit in front of rear tires. I'm in the process of replacing the reducers. I'm welding in O2 bugs in the New ones. I was thinking of making an X- pipe for it instead of the H-pipe. Haven't decided yet though. I've been under the impression that an X will have a different torque curve than a H. How much????

The factory usually goes bigger than 2" with their performance engines, and it's not because they're saving money that way. Even my 150hp. four cylinder neon had 2 1/2" factory pipes on it. Granted, I wouldn't put 5" grapefruit shooters on my car...

I run 2" Doug's into 3" TTI Exhaust, with an H-Pipe. Not a fan of the X-Pipe Tone.

Hey Prop, can you explain? I don't know the difference in sounds between these two styles - I was leaning toward the 'H' design because it seemed easier for me to do, but if the tone changes as well I'd like to know about it. What do you not like about the X-Pipe tone?

Thanks...

Sure, no problem Photon. Too me the X-Pipe takes on a higher note, meaning the RPM sounds like it's higher than it really is. At the same time it sounds like a bit of the deep rumble is lost as well. It's definitely a noticeable difference, from my perspective. Below is a Youtube VID (sorry, it's a X-Pipe Nova), start watching around 50 seconds. Sounds a little "Pitchy". The one's I've heard in the past all seem to have that trademark sound. Again, just my opinion.

I will be running 1 3/4 Hedman UTCs into 3" collectors, 2.5" pipes through flowmaster 40's, no H or X pipe.

when revving it up, it sounds like my 09 challenger SRT8 with flowmaster 44s and an x pipe. It loses that classic sound

This test was done by Pontiac guys but it has a lot of interesting information on the subject.

Great article. Seems to be the trend...5-10 hp over an equiv sized H. I like the fact they stress 'quiet' too. Loud 12 sec or slower musclecars are an embarrassment...right up there w/ fart can imports and Harley's to me. Must suck to be so loud and yet so slow.

I'm planning on running the biggest Ultra flow case I can find in 3" w/ 3" X and maybe a set of resonators on each side of the spare tire well in line w/ the tailpipes. I've also seen some work done by an OEM for an enclosed crossover I may experiment w/ depending on what it ends up sounding like (think drilled h/x pipe enclosed in a resonance chamber).

I have 2 1/2 with a h pipe I dont know how much power im giving up but it sure sounds good.

Like Herr indicated, maybe 5-10HP at best. Some argue the other way, but there's a million threads/articles out there to read. Most end up in bickering fests. They say you gain HP's because of the better scavenging with the tied X crossflow. Creates a better pull. Decibel wise, it isn't any more quiet than a H-Pipe, just has a different tone.

Agree on all accounts Prop, here's my set up on the '64 and very similar on the Challenger.

2-1/8" TTI, 3-1/2" Collectors, 3" pipe, Eagle mufflers.

Now I'll have to compare mine to an H pipe "thanks Prop" actually it does sound a little different but I thought it was my mufflers that made it sound that way:thinker:. I'm running Hooker Super Comps because I've ran them in the past with good luck and these ones fit great as well. The pipes are a Pypes brand 3" stainless X pipe universal kit with homemade stainless mufflers (flowmaster style) that dump the exhaust out in front of the rears. It sounds mean as hell.

I bought the entire 2-1/2 with X pipe setup from TTI using HP manifolds on my 67 coronet everybody that heres it says it sounds great ,even the machine shop that built the engine said it has a lot deeper rumble over the fords and chevies he builds

Fitting up mine this week. 2" Doug's Headers into the 3" American Thunder Flowmaster H-Pipe with the Delta 44's... The only thing I'm not sure about is if I'll like the mufflers... I'm really digging the sound of Dynomax Ultra-Flo's but that's a cheap enough swap if I decide to do it in the future since the kit came with the 44's
