I was doing some searching on the site and found this idea by A383Wing that was posted about 8 years ago. Its a great way to camouflage a set of dual quads under a "stock" air cleaner for a real sleeper look. I like it so much I'm going to use it on the 440 that's going in to my '64 Polara. All I'll need to do is remove the snorkel, patch the hole and have the top chromed and it will fit right in with a Street Wedge theme. All it will need is a set of stock chrome valve covers to complete the look.

Neet ! Now that's some use of the old gray matter upstairs !

Thats a very cool idea ! But I will admit I like the look of the stock factory air cleaners showing off the dual fours or the six pack or the single carb like me. If I had the cash to build a more stout eng like I wanted to I would have also been able to afford the cool crossram setup for my 63. But I had to build within my budget and I used this air cleaner because its short enough to fit under my hood and not to big in diameter as I found the bigger drop base held more eng heat overtop my carb bowls which the ethanal in the pump gas does not like and this one being smaller does not hold as much heat over the carb bowls and since it breathes through the top also it gives my eng enough air to run fine on the street. But I do love the look of the crossram on top of a Max Wedge eng !! Ron

just for reference, the top lid is larger than the base, so basically it's an unsilenced air cleaner with a single snorkel. I use the stock air filter under the top tin...the base I made from aluminum plate. Nobody really thinks to look under there unless they look close at intake.

Before I ordered the manifold I measured my original air cleaner to make sure this idea would fit without major mods. With some manifolds this won't work, mainly the Weiand and Offy units as they mount the carbs a bit too far apart. However, the stock manifold and the Edelbrock unit mount them close enough together for this to work (the Eldebrock manifold has a center to center measurement of just 6 7/16"). My air cleaner top measures 17 1/2" so I should have nearly 1 1/2" all the way around to allow fresh air in. Basically, like A383Wing says, it makes an unsilenced air cleaner out of your stock unit.

In my case, since I can't afford the crossram I decided to go with the 426 street wedge look and the mods to the single snorkel top are really easy to do to make it a clone of the street wedge air cleaner. Just remove the snorkel, patch the hole and have it chromed.

the difference between the carb spacing on my 383 intake vs the 426 is 1/4" difference. The intake I'm using is a stock Chrysler cast iron dual quad
