I recently sold a ton of parts out of my storage, so I have been thinking about whats next after the v-code Bee is done, I am going to do an independent suspension 68-70 b-body convertible...

Figured I would make a thread about the motor build, with part numbers and dyno sheet, from start to finish. Its going to be a pretty straight forward build, 440 +30, hyd cam, cast heads, etc..

I spoke with my builder last Monday about doing a basic 440 to have on the shelf for a future build, just a 30 bore, 4bbl, 1970 block hp stamped, 906 heads, steel crank, voodoo cam, etc..

So this week I ordered some parts...
Speed Pro teflon coated 4v relief pistons L2355f
Hastings +30 rings 40722
ms877p clevite main bearings
cb527p rod bearings
10230702lk Voodoo camshaft
m63hv melling oil pump
is63 melling dist drive w/ bushing
Mopar fuel pump shaft
7840-16 comp cams push rods
3125 comp cams timing set
925-16 comp springs
ebay ss bolt kit $50
ARP rods bolts 145-6002
ARP Main bolts 140-5001
ARP cam bolts 144-1001
ebay oil pump bolt kit $15
sh876s/pe114r brass freeze plugs, cam bearings
Felpro gasket set 260-1001
Felpro ms96000 valley pan kit
m4862 carter fuel pump

I also ordered a set of rockers and shafts, set of
retainers, intake and exhaust valves with locks, and seals, it was all from Falcon, they normally send elgin brand which is similar to factory stuff, maybe made a little nicer...

So tomorrow I am going to dig the hp motor out of the shed, the heads are already at my builders shop on his shelf, they were already cleaned and checked. The block was already cleaned and checked, will need to be recleaned since I never painted it, but it has a really nice std bore, the car it came out of had under 20K miles on it, it was pulled in the 70's!!!

So with everything I purchased this week, most of it was from Falcon (I have yet to find a company that can come close to their prices) I spent around $1600, I have tons of oil pans, timing, and valve covers. I will just clean and paint a set some time before the machine work is done, I also have the balancer that come with the crank I am going to use, with the factory rods that are still bolted to it. Hopefully the pistons I bought are close to the stock pistons other wise I will have to get balanced ($250 extra)...

So I am going to have the machine shop clean, bore, and hone my block. That is the easy stuff, Then it will go to the builder and I am going to have him, chamfer/polish the crank, press the old pistons off and new ones on, do a comp valve job on the heads, port match the heads and the intake, and build the motor.

With a decent 4bbl intake I would imagine this motor should be in the 425 hp neighborhood and a decent driver.

I am looking for a convertible, I would like a coronet 500 or a satellite to make either a coronet R/T clone or a GTX clone, just waiting for the right one, there is a sat convertible 5 minutes from me, big block car with a/c, but the guy wants $12k, lol...

plus I would rather have a 70', Ill find something, I am sure of it, they always pop up.

My plan is to do the b-body convertible with the works, I have a jaguar rear end that I would like to get to work in the car (independent suspension was for another project that I ended up not doing 4 wheel indy, already all rebuilt with 3.43 gears and posi). I am going to do a/c 4 wheel disc 18/17" wheels, coil over suspension, digital gauges, fuel injection (maybe), etc etc etc

I have a 727 all rebuilt also, it was put in a car for 2000 miles then the car was switched to 4spd, so having the motor will just put me a step closer.

On a side note, anyone sees a 70 sat or coronet convertible, let me know...

sounds like a decent build combo, should be fun

good luck

Just send these parts out to me here in So Ca (Mojave Desert)
LOL

Cool,
I just finished a 440 for the 67 GTX

Thanks guys, I got the block dug out and delivered, heads should be all built and assembled by the end of the week, motor is scheduled to be bored Friday, almost all of the parts are here, still waiting for the cam set, timing set, and gasket set, but tracking shows them arriving today. I went through some covers and pulled out a st of valve covers, oil pan, and timing cover, I blasted them and will paint them as soon as this humidity is gone, plastikote 228 on both sides and then 226 on the outside.

The crank checked out good at standard, he polished and chamf'd it already, he pressed off the old pistons, the weight seems close enough, the new pistons are a bit heavier but he said he can machine that weight out of the wrist pins, I am dropping the new pistons and rod bolts off when the rest of the parts get here... This motor may be done by Monday, lol...

Sounds like a cool build! But not sure that block is going to go .300 over

I'm all about spending money wisely, and stretching a buck with this car stuff..... However, the pistons will not be close to the same weight of the factory ones that the crank was balanced with.
The set I purchased "matched set" weren't even matched well between each other.....
I would have your machine shop find the lightest one, and match the others to it, then balance the assembly...
Just my 2 cents....

Hope it runs well for you,,,, sounds like a handful of good parts!!

If I can save a couple hundred bucks not getting it balanced I am going to try, lol. He will machine them to match the old set and then machine them to match each other, I know just a bit off the pins takes a lot of weight off..
