what brand of spark plugs do you guys run?

I have a 73 charger with edelbrock heads on a bored 360 engine with a small cam headers and a air gap intake, I run champion plugs and have always since I bought the car 25years ago. I have noticed that the engine has always idled kind of ruff and I have never been able to correct it.the engine makes great power but visiting a web sight there was a number of post talking about champion plugs and how they are junk compared to other plugs, is this true or is this just their opinion?
 
Ngk here, previously ran autolites, no issues......

Always had issues with champions.
 
I've never had an issue with Champions.
 
I use anything but Champions and here's why.

I helped a friend replace a timing chain on a Superbird, and while we were doing that we also did a tune up using Champion plugs. When we went to start the car, we had a CNS situation. We thought we had put the chain on wrong, so we tore everything down again and double checked the timing marks and we were spot on. We put everything back together and it would crank but not start. We knew the plugs were good because they were brand new.

After chasing wires for an hour or so, The Old Guy... every military auto hobby shop has a The Old Guy... came over to see what was up. We told him what the situation was and the first words out of his mouth was "did you use Champion plugs?", and when we said yes he told us that was the problem. We pulled all the plugs and they were fine at first sight, but then he picked each one up and put some pressure on the tops. Turns out five of the eight had cracks in the insulators that you couldn't see without bending them a bit. We went and got some AC plugs and that 440 fired right up.

It was about 20 years before I used Champions again, in a 1995 Police Interceptor, and it ran rough afterwards. I pulled the plugs and two of the eight had those cracks in the insulators! From 1982 to 2002, nothing had changed. Same problem. I haven't touched a Champion since.
 
I have never owned a Mopar that did not run its best with Champions. i have never had any luck getting a Mopar to run on ACs. And I always figured Ma Mopar had a pretty good idea witch worked best, or they would not have used them as standard equipment, and replacement parts.
 
I've been using Champion plugs in my 440 for a long time and have never had a problem. Anytime you are swapping plugs of any brand it's a good idea to give them a through inspection. I've found many damaged plugs new in the box. Like the old guy said, make sure that the insulators aren't cracked by putting a little pressure on them and eyeballing them real good. Don't assume that they are gapped correctly from the factory either. I know firsthand that shippers and part store employees aren't careful handling stock, so the boxes may look ok but checking the plugs before installation is just common sense.
 
This is off subject a bit but I've always used and have never had any problems with Fram oil filters either. It might just be my good fortune to have never had issues with either Champion or Fram and I've owned over 30 vehiicles in my 50 years of living. As a side note: My Dad loves Quaker State oil and has never had issues with it. He is 73 years old.

I used Autolites too, mostly in racing & haven't really had any issues with any of them...

Biggest problem is people getting the wrong style plug or wrong heat range,
resister style plug when then don't need it in a racecar etc., really not the wrong mnfgr...

A lot of hubbub over advertising...
I have a buddy that works at Chevron research facility in Richmond {also a big time racer}
testing stuff like this, all the time, from his testing he claimed the best overall for everyday use & longevity
was the NGK platinum, with extended tips...
But he also said there's very little difference between brands...
He also said when he tested the E-3's they did well for bottom end, but that's pretty much nominal #'s overall...

I actually have a set of Accel's shorty's in my current RR with alum angle plug heads
& so far so good, no complaints

I had E-3's in my old Dakota R/T, I wanted to try them,
actually it cleaned up the idle HC's a bit, other wise no issues either...

Plug choice & peoples personal opinions are like ( ! ), well you know, everyone has one....
 
I have run Autolite , NGK and Champion with no trouble using any of them. Lately I have been using NGK's. Ron
 
NGK Race plugs from Jeg, I'm with Bru wanted to stick with the OE recommended Champs but dam almost everyone had cracked insulators, chased down rough idle issues for hours/days before finding them, turns out the porcelain used is inferior probably china and can't take the heat of headers around 200° they start to break down. have not used the autolites.

Just wondering if anyone is or has run the newer tech plugs? Platinum, iridium ect. Would they help or hurt?
 
I used Champs on all of my Mopars but the 300. But since the dealership went belly up, I've been using NGK ever since. I got better fuel mileage and better trap speed from the Charger.....
 
I am using Accell right now. I had Bosch Platinum in mine when I got it. I got a pretty bad scare when I pulled my plugs and #7 plug had disintegrated inside. I can't be sure what caused it, I just hope nothing inside is hurt. I don't have time to pull the head off and investigate right now.
