I just had a new headliner put in my '74 Charger SE, at a headliner shop. Now the dome light comes on when I hit the brake pedal (only with car running, nothing with key off or on). Dome light is not working at all when doors are open. It worked perfectly before. Any ideas what it could be?

It obviously has some wires crossed/shorted. Wiring problems can be tough to track down. Do you have a wiring diagram? Hmm... I think the dome light is fed by a constant hot wire (?) and lights up when you get a ground through either door switch (?). So... it must be getting a ground from a brake light wire. Maybe check the connector right near the parking brake pedal behind the kick panel? If the interior on your car is all installed, I'm not sure how a headliner shop would even get at those wires??? Might also be something melted near the steering column connector(s). I'm just guessing here. Maybe pull the hot wire off of the brake switch & see if the dome light problem goes away (?)

Not too obvious like you could think. I have dealing with that by some years ( not last three since my car is disassemblied now on a DEEP body job ), AND I'm still wondering what exactly is happening. Not full dome light but dimming dome light when giving brakes. I think brake lights don't come up on that moment or not enough to light up able to see it on rearview mirror at least

What I have found is some problem located at fuse box cavity, since gets WAY HOT up to melt the area on fusebox. I have cleaned that fuse clips and tight them to hold the fuse better and fix it for a while but some months later it happens again.

as I have told... still tracking the problem.

that fuse feeds also hazzards, interior batt sources ( map light, glove box light ), and I think parking lights too. Cant't recall right now

but you said just with car running, and not in other position?

is that the only moment the dome comes on ?

My 67 will do that after the rain leaks in under the dash. The brake lights don't work when the dome light comes on with the brake pedal. I pop the fuse out and put it right back in and everything is back to normal.

Thanks guys...The brake pedal does not light the dome light unless car is running. Everything else works perfectly, brake lights, turn signals, map light, running lights, all except door switches. I haven't had a chance to track it down until this weekend. BTW, my car is almost like new, stored for 35 years, has 39K miles on her. Nothing has been disconnected except the trunk light wire. It kept blowing a fuse, so obviously something is wrong there. Also, I just replaced the brake master cylinder, so my son had to pump the brakes a lot while I bled the lines...I will replace stoplight switch tomorrow, see if that fixes it. Thanks again for your input! Later TB
