I'm working on installing a console in my '63 Fury; it's out of another car (Lincoln). Found it at a meet and thought it had some potential as the space between the buckets is empty. The console I have is leather; a maroon color and would like to re-color to a red matching my red interior. I've watched several clips on the web and there's all sorts of products for doing this. Wondering if anyone on the forum did a color change to leather and has some advice? (Dye seems the right way to go rather than painting it far as I've researched). Thanks.

I dyed the faded carpet back of my rear fold-down and rear deck with black dye from Detail King. I didn't want to use the aerosol can stuff on it. It looks a ton better but it's not "new" carpet. I don't know what they have for leather or vinyl. You might also try Legendary for some bulk material to replace yours.

I have done leather work for living, doing a color change on leather is a lot more challenging then vinyl or plastic. Color change makes it even harder but can be done, seems how you are going from a dark red to a lighter red you should be good. Does the leather have any cracks, deep cracks and creases like it's been folded a million times, cuts, tears etc.?
Prepping, cleaning, repairing, cleaning, touch up repairs and prepping again is the most important step before doing a color change.
Do you have the color? Do you have the "flex agent", slip agent, cross linker and hardener to go with the dye? All those are needed to go with the job you want to do and that stuff isn't cheap, who's dye are you going to use SEM's? Have you priced that stuff yet? You just can't clean and shoot some color on it, like I said, leathers a lot more challenging then vinyl. If I were closer, I could give you a hand.
Maybe give one of these a call if they are in your area and they can help you out and get you a price on what you want to do. Good Luck

I would give a professional a call about dying it, working with leather is tricky as 69a100 said. Sometimes it better to bit the bullet and pay somebody who does it for a living so it turns out nice and lasts a long time.

Why not bring it to an upholstery shop, have them change the leather to your suitable color ?

Well seeing all the products out there and clips on leather recoloring it piqued my interest in trying to do it. I had thought about having new leather put on or even painting it. The leather is in pretty nice shape no tears only one narrow wear spot - where the color has been rubbed away.

If the color is rubbed away, that's a no big deal thing as just a touch up shot would blend the color into the old. Sorry to have rained on your parade so to speak. If your leather is fine, then reall all that would be done is scrub it good with SEM Soap, H2O, a Grey scrubber, and some clean towels. Scrub and clean leather real good, rinse, look for any nooks & crannies and clean any areas you missed , rinse again. Mix your color, shoot it, watch it dry, shoot to cover where needed and apply a 2nd coat, watch dry and enjoy. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good Luck

Thanks much. What's your advice for application? Pad or sponge viewing some of the videos or some showed spray; I'd have to find an air brush or gun if spraying.

You can use a foamy, I always used to just shoot it unless I needed a think coat on a heavy wear area, I did use a brush, but it wasn't very often. Do you have everything to do the job? If so, practice on a piece of junk. You do understand what self leveling is? If it levels out so the strokes aren't
shown, your good to go. Just watch out for air bubbles as you brush, if you get fish eyes, stop and clean that area before proceeding. Good Luck
