ok its been about 7 years since timing a bb 1970-440- 4spd mild build? so at engine temp block vac line going to distributor. My timing light has advance setting on it so at 2000rpm go 34 degrees advance or am I way off on the advance? Would that show tdc on mark on balancer doing it that way ? I have knock at higher rpms just started to run 92 octane. Runs and starts good. Thanks for any help.

That is about right. EDIT - SEE BELOW

Just my opinion but 2 grand is way to soon for full advance plus other things effect this like weight and gearing as well as carb size/type and cam specs. on and on. Do you have a factory service manual.

Yeah, your total timing should be around 34 but not all in at 2k. Rev to around 3500 and see if it's more than 34.

If everything is good now except the ping then either add octane or simply retard 2 degrees at a time until it goes away.

Don't over think it. Good luck!

Good advice....maybe it's advancing more over 2k and that is what is causing your ping. Maybe you real total advance is 40+

Maybe you real total advance is 40+ I can't remember exactly, but I think you want total mechanical advance at 2600 or 2800 rpm? Something around 34-36 degrees? Initial timing set in the 12-16 degree range? Somebody please jump in if I'm off-base here.

750 mechanical carb-4:10 gears dont know on cam. No on manual ,spec says 5 + on 440 hp ,tdc on reg 440

50/50 mix of Sunoco 110 and 93 solved my problem with pinging.

Depending on the engine, build/combo etc, it may like more timing or not. 5 degrees at idle has never worked very well for any of mine even the ones with 10-1 static compression. Start out by the book and then give it what it likes. If it runs good with 5 initial, then use that but mine always did better with 10+ initial. Total timing is a trial thing with mine too.....
