A hard lesson on tires

I hear this, but seems overrated. I'm still struggling with throwing away the original tires on the 09 Challenger. 13k. They live an easy shaded life, but have the required Michelin dry rot that I hope is superficial.

There is plenty of info available on the subject. Here is a excerpt from a site explaining the "why" its not overrated:

"Tires age dangerously because of a chemical process commonly referred to as oxidation, which simply means that as the tire components are exposed to oxygen, the oxygen particles cause the flexible components of a tire to harden and become brittle. Over time, the tire will simply fall apart under normal stress, just like an old rubber band. Because this process occurs naturally, it does not matter if a tire is being used, stored as a spare, or simply waiting on a store shelf for an unsuspecting consumer."

I was going to put this on the wheel forum, but think more will see it here.

Learned a hard lesson, yesterday, while making my second drive in my 64. Never dreamed it could happen! If it's something you don't know, maybe it will help others. I sure didn't!

Around 10 years ago, while the 64 was being painted, went to Discount tires, and got a set of BF Goodrich tires mounted on my wheels. I've bought from Discount for many years, and keep in mind, what I'm saying is good for any brand of tires.

About halfway of the drive, to where I was going, on the interstate doing 70-75 mph, started noticing some kind of vibration. What the heck? Couldn't pick out where it was coming from. I was a little over a mile, from where I was going. With all the heavy traffic, high speeds, decided to ride it out, and look things over off the highway. Then...BOOM...front right tire had completely blown out! A new tire, with only 700 miles on it, no spare, no jack, and 108 degrees outside.

Long story short, had the wife bring me what I needed, to get the wheel off. That tire had lost every square inch of tread on it! Took the wheel, back down the road a couple mile, where a Discount tire was. The guy looked the tire over, looked at numbers, and told me the tire was too old! Told me any tire over 8 years old, is considered 'unsafe".

Had no idea on that one. So, I'm looking at having to replace all my tires! When the tire let go, it also did some damage to my right front fender. Probably going to have to pull it, to get it straightened.
Miler, just got my car runnng again after 15 yrs in the garage, hated to do it but took off the front tires and sold them for 20.00 each, still had all the little mold ******* on the tread, NO miles just sitting in the garage, BUT they had expired and I was not going to take the chance on messing up my car over a set of expired tires,(nice set of BF Goodrich) had a set of 12.50x33 goodrichs on the back that had been made in 1986, sold them too for 40.00. 64 tudor bel, my front fenders are lite weight glass and if one came apart it would tear the fender plum off the car!! oh well. Dave.

Did you tell the buyer(s) how old the tires were so they knew the risk? For the $60 you got, someone else is in danger of the same thing you wanted to avoid. Was it worth it? Just sayin. Might even open you up to liability. If someone get's killed cause of them and the lawyers who sue you find your post here that you knew the tires were a danger.........

Thanks for your story, pwDave! Bad enough for something like that to happen with a steel body, much less one like yours.

It's an eye-opener, and grit your teeth deal for sure. IF I had know, my story would be different. And, no, don't know how long this has been an issue. Not going to look it up...just deal with it. In my day, good tread, and no dry rot, good to go. In my one eye, guess I'm seeing 'new and improved'.
Think I've already said hard lesson.

Ordered tires Tuesday. While talking to the counterman, he told me the tire age thing started in the 90s. No wonder I never heard about it, going by normal tire wear. Said things got heavy, after a tire separated on some guy's car, it flipped, killing him!

Anyway, programming resuming...

Very welcome! Knew I wasn't the lone ranger on this BS. Was hoping it might help others, not aware.

'Nother $800 down the tube.
