This question involves two cars. One is our 1971 Challenger with a 408 small block 833 manual and open 323 gears. We are getting its sure grip worked on. It's in at a racing shop now but we would like to race it on October 20th.

The other car is a 1997 Camaro SS, 6 speed T56, LT1 with an Auburn limited slip rear. I've only gone down a 1/4 track about 5 times and an 1/8th track 10X about a month ago in each.

Do I find the RPMs the car likes, where it doesn't bog or doesn't spin, then just side step the clutch or do I rev it a little more and feather the clutch some? It seemed like when I did the latter I was smelling clutch but is a side step to harsh?

The 1/4 mile will be prepped the 1/8 mile won't be.

Steve, check out www.clutchtamer.com I am going to install one in my 64 bb 4-sp car this winter. I was always going to design something similar but HEY, here it is.I think this is the cats meow or something equivilant. I have a mcloud heavy duty 600 hp rated clutch now but I fully expect to have to get one of the dual disc setups with my new 512 engine but maybe it will hold. Oh yeah, side stepping is certain disaster in my book basically like hitting 2 hammers together.

When I was drag racing my C6 vette with a manual trans, I learned a lot from this guy. It may be helpful for your application

After failing to hit the "sweet spot" on launch RPMs in my 89 Conquest TSi turbo 2.6 liter turbo, either too little RPMs and it would fall on its face, or too many and I got wheelspin, in my frustration I did a clutch dump and BAM! snapped the rather heavy duty U joint.
In my 70 440+6 Roadrunner, I have had to come off the start around 1400 RPMs and once I rolled a few feet stand on it. Any more aggressive than that and my 315/35/17 Toyo Proxes TQ drag radials would spin like crazy.
Honestly the best thing I've experienced is just the right amount of wheelspin with decent RPMs in the fat part of the power band and the clutch fully engaged, but that is almost impossible to duplicate. The 4.10 R&P has helped a lot.

Sounds great!! :thankyou:
You can eliminate the delay in full clutch engagement for 1-2/2-3/3-4 shifts by using a drop out spacer!
Personally I can't WAIT to try one for my launches!! BUT I don't want to have to have a full engagement delay in the upshifts, so they say to use a drop out spacer.
