hey Gents.
My throttle cable end has rusted through and broken where the head connects to the carb. Anyone had any luck with repairing this or is it all around better to just get a new cable?
Thank you kindly

A throttle cable on a half century old car has rusted through to the point where it has broken and you ask us whether you should try to repair it or replace it?!?!?!?!

There are some tricks if you want to try to salvage but you may end up with a cable too short. Also if it's rusted in one area could be in others. Sorta surprised it rusted there kinda unusual. Also make sure there's no binding, kinking, or miss-alignment going on placing more stress on the cable...suggest getting a new one.

Drill a BB with a hole large enough so you can run the cable through and crush the BB. Put a new cable and tools in the trunk so when craps out you'll only swear at me while your changing the cable.

ive been looking at the discount parts sites for anew one but im finding strange inconsistencies like they have a cable that says its for a 72-78 318 or a 71-74 440 but nothing on a 71 with a 340 anyone know a part number i can look at?

When I needed a throttle cable for my '66 318, I couldn't find a new one anywhere. I had one place out on the West coast who would build me a new one - if I sent them my old one! I checked out our local motorcycle shop and ordered a new inner and end pieces from a dirt bike supplier and made my own. That was in 2014 & it's still going strong. Why not give it a try, nothing

Can you post a close up of the damaged end? If you have fabrication skills, a MIG welder, etc. it may be possible to repair it.

welp its definitely going to be a new cable... i went to snap a pic of the damage and dropped the little u shaped retainer that connects the cable to the carb somewhere in the engine bay ...im sure it will fall out somehwere down the road haha. too bad the rest of the cable is in great shape it was just where the steel wire connected to the metal bracket to go to the carb that broke.

Very important to take note of this statement. Are you absolutely confident in that cable? New one is your best bet, in my opinion as well.

Welp finally found an inexpensive replacement on amazon of all places. $21 shipped, and th pic looks identical to what I pulled out hopefully she works
