I went through the same deal, car was to cheap to pass up but was missing the dash, took it to the State Trooper inspection station where they confirmed it's legitimacy then got a state issues vin tag. I was told to just throw another tag on it by others but I'm not one to go around worrying about getting my butt in a pickle, there's right and there's wrong.

You rock 747. It's a pain in the butt, but then you are 100% Legal. I was at US-41 Dragway (just South of Chicago) a few years ago during a "test & tune" session. Several state troopers showed up in the staging lanes & started checking for VIN numbers and paperwork on a bunch of cars.
