Mexico has an excellent car culture, comparable to the U.S.
Two years ago in Mazatlan we’re having supper at one of those portable restaurants that pop up at night in parking lots and road medians.
A couple blocks in the distance you could hear a couple of SERIOUS engines wind up, and they are getting closer. I didn’t see what the other car was, but one was a Mustang, probably from the ‘90’s. Both sounded and ran like top fuel cars. They flashed by us WAY over 100mph, in a residential neighbourhood. Every car guy around dropped his jaw to the floor. It was AWESOME, but so scary dangerous.
Last month we’re having supper, watching the world go by. You could hear the distinct thumping of a hot, opposed four engine. You could literally feel it in your feet, it shook the ground. I assumed it was a Subaru all done up. It’s an old guy and his wife in an amazing fiberglass dune buggy from the ‘60’s or ‘70’s, show car quality. This was beautiful, old school. The motor was very far from stock. He slowly pounds by a street full of awe struck car guys, and punches it. Instant tire smoke, none of that using the brakes bullshit. He lays down a great patch then lets off and continued on his way. It was so freakin’ cool.
