I have a brand new out of the box AVS2 that I installed on my 383. After starting the engine and breaking in the cam, I needed to set up the throttle cable and throttle pressure. When doing this I alway take off the clip and short rod from the accelerator pump to avoid pumping the engine full of gas when cycling/setting the adjustments.
Call me crazy but I think the carb has a problem. With no linkage connected and no throttle return connected, the primaries have zero return on their own. The will float anywhere between the idle position up to the point that the secondaries start to apply. They have no return on they own.
(The secondaries do, they close on their own during that last 25% of throttle travel)
I know the accelerator pump has a spring load to is but I do not ever remember that being the ONLY they that pulls the throttle closed when it’s just sitting on the bench (for example)
I know you run return spring, that’s not the point, i’m Wondering if the carb itself has an issue.
I hope i’m Explaining this clearly.

Well, it should be pretty obvious if there is a return spring built into the carb linkage or not.
If there isn’t one to be found, I’d say a call the Edelbrock is in order to determine if it’s supposed to have one or not.

I agree with you it should have one.

If you find it does have one, but isn’t functioning....... perhaps it’s installed incorrectly, or is weak, etc.

The only carb of that style I have on hand to look at is a factory carter for a 383...... and it isn’t easily accessible at the moment.

there should be a spring in the accelerator pump well. if it's not there then you can have the issue your having. there also should be a light spring wrapped around the exposed portion of the primary throttle shaft on the choke side. that may not be properly indexed.

I got to looking at the coil spring on the passenger side and it should have no effect on what your doing. I did notice looking thru my spare parts 3 types of accelerator pump well springs and a 2 different lengths of pumps.

Only issue I see on the carb, is not having the return spring in place.
Sure, many times, I've set-up carbs the same way, throttle cable and return spring off. But...throttle arm then has to be working by hand, opening or closing.
If your running it, with nothing on the throttle arm, of course it's gonna float. Needs that 'mechanical device' to close to idle setting. Natural as can be.
Yep, secondaries are spring loaded, working off the primarys.
Carb is okay.
