Hello, I'm new here. I have a 1968 Satellite 318 worked over a little. Car has been sitting for years and had new quarters and new paint job over that time. When parked it ran fine. I yanked the carb off years ago for something else, picked up another Holley 600 at the Indy swap meet. Had a edelbrooke too. It wouldnt idle or run right with it on so I popped the Holley on...it wouldnt idle but it I rev it up it will stay running but popped and cracked. So I thought I should rebuild it. So I did and also rewired the engine compartment and upgraded to newer voltage regulator. Well almost the same thing is going On except it isnt poping and cracking just a little ruff sounding, but it still wont idle. Unless I hold my hand over the back half of the carb then I get gas on my hand and when I remove my hand it revs up then dies...ive had this thing apart twice cleaning and blowing thru it. Had it off and on adjusting the rear butterflies...nothing changes cant get any adjustment out of the idle air screws nothing...ita got me at wits end. Another issue I have is I dont think the voltage regulator is working but I havent had a chance to get a new one to see that theres no issue there. I will be taking the one off my van tomarrow to check that the charging system is working properly..but that shouldnt have an effect on this issue...its wired correctly, has new plugs, and I cant find any vacume leaks....i was wanting to get this thing going and go to the nats this weekend but if I cant get this carb to work that wont happen. I think this carb is just junk or has been peiced together and just isnt right or somthing...can anyone help me with any ideas? Thanks Kevin fromOhio.

I dont know if this is allowed I'm new here but I really need help and I posted in the forum section for fuel and air can anyone help me out and read my thread? Thanks Kevin.

Check for vacuum leaks around the intake. Seems like its sucking air..

I'm begining to think its internal...? Ihad the edelbrooke on it while it was at the body guys for two years...idk what he may have done to it...would one or two broken or cracked valves cause that? Or piston rings bad cause it? Maybe a hole in a piston? I dont think its that bad but when it shuts off you can hear it letting compression out but it sounds like its coming from the exhaust ports...its been a few years since ive really had to mess with **** like this and ive never done it full time.

It has a edelbrooke performer intake....i mean I can't find a leak on it but I guess it could leak into the cam Valley? Idk maybe the gasket has gone bad it hasnt been run really in 3 years and before that got parked in 2008. But prior to that it was ok except the wiring...

Two things come to mind.
Gas? Is the gas fresh? If the gas is too old, tank needs to be drained, and start with fresh. That includes the gas in the lines, all the way to the carb.

Have you checked the carb's floats settings? Even on a new one, could be off.

Fresh gas, and floats are correct with new needle and seats, had it apart twice, new gaskets all that jazz.

you say you put your hand over the chock horn and it runs good,if so a lean mixture

No the secondaries...said the back half of carb. It has size 66 jets and a 6.5 booster. But yeah it acts as if it's running out of fuel but yet runs/ smells rich.

Ive blew compressed air threw all passages and used 3 cans of carb cleaner, seems like its just a junk carb could the bas plate be wrong? Or weong gasket? I put the same one as was on before but i know that dont mean **** it could have been wrong to start with..

Is your PCV working? I’d look again for a vacuum leak somewhere. Baseplate of carb could be warped/leaking.

Same problems with different carbs? Put a new coil on it..to rule it out.

Good advice on your other thread. It sure sounds like it's sucking air somewhere. VERY CAREFULLY spray carb cleaner around any area where it "could" leak. The idle will go up and smooth out temporarily when the carb cleaner hits the air leak hole. A vacuum gauage attached will also "wobble back & forth" if you have a vacuum leak. If it's not a vacuum leak, you may be using the wrong carburetor gaskets from your kit.
