Hello,

Well, like most projects, a simple torque converter swap turned into a much bigger one after I drained the fluid and found out my 727 has been eating itself. The magnet in the pan was completely covered in metal 'paste' and there were also large chunks of something scattered in as well. I've called a few local trans shops and most are either telling me they could do it in a 'month or two' or won't touch a trans that old, and I'm just not looking to wait that long. So I'm now looking at just buying a new trans however, I've run into an issue that I'm hoping you guys could help me with.

It seems alot of these rebuilt/modified 727's no longer have the correct tailhousing to work with a stock console shifter, which is a deal breaker for me as I just restored my interior (including a brand new shifter, knob and linkage) and I really don't want to drill/cut up my interior or install a aftermarket shifter that would look out of place in an otherwise 100% stock setting. So, does anyone know if any of the larger manufacturers (TCI, B&M, etc.) offer a upgraded trans that will still work with a stock shifter. I should also mention, this car has a built 440, not sure of exact power, but thats why I'm looking at an upgraded/remanufactured unit, rather than just another stock 727. Any help would be appreciated!

Try HAAS transmission in Dexter Mi. They do great work and have no problem with those "old transmissions" (734) 426-0505
440'

What's your budget ?
Gearstar has these for your consideration

Glad you did this thread! Haven't thought about the tailhousing having the tabs for the console shifter for a long time. Checked my 4 tailhousings on the shelf, 2 have the tabs, 2 don't. Got several of my cores from van 727's, not sure if those had the tabs.
Check with John Cope for your trans needs. Plenty of aftermarket suppliers, A&A, A-1, Coan, Turbo Action, etc.
Edit: My prices to customers may have been way low. LOL

I'll definitely give them a call, my dad works in Ann Arbor, so that would definitely be doable.

As much as I'd love a Gearstar unit, those are out of my budget at the moment. I'll check out the other ones, definitely still weighing my options at this point.

Just curious, anyone ever use the JEGS brand remanufacred 727? A buddy just sent me a link to it and said he's been running one in his dart with a built 383 and likes it. Its also $3-400 cheaper than the next available option I've seen and will supposedly handle 450hp, I've just never been a big fan of the 'generic brand' style parts lol

You should be able to find a local shop to rebuild the transmission. They are pretty easy to rebuild, but there are a few tools you may need to get, like good snap ring pliers (Internal and External). A clutch drum piston compressor. I made my own, but two large C-Clamps and a flat board or piece of metal will work in a pinch. Bushing driver(s)

and yeah, I know you can swap tailghousings if you really have to, but at the cost of voiding any warranty on your new trans, which would really suck if something unrelated failed and then they'd deny you replacement because of it.

You would think that. The few shops I've called locally are either backed up for the foreseeable future or won't touch anything older than 1990, the one shop I called didn't even know what a 727 Torqueflite was lmao. I do live in basically the middle of nowhere Michigan, so there really isn't much 'local' to me.

Ask around the area or the drag racers. There are old trans guys around.

sorry to say watch yourself at CRT, he sells units That don’t work correctly and doesn’t make it right.

It’s not every customer, Some work out great, but Don’t be the guy with a. Problem. Go to A&A! my buddy got stung on a bracket race trans that burnt up the first day at the track. 6 runs and hi gear smoked in a 300LB A body with a small block. Heard other similar stories on another forum. Boils down to his in house valve bodies, he admitted he had a problem and “the thought I had the problem solved” Well when his products cost you money then it bad deal. There’s a guy on here with a non workin g fresh CRT, but we don’t know the problem yet.

Both of mine sure work GREAT. So have the parts I've gotten from him. Only issue I had on parts, he was fair with me.

I never heard anything bad about CRT. Well other that he doesn’t have great customer relation skills. A&A trans. I believe that’s Andrews Racing transmissions. Kim

I used the B&M and it has worked great .

Here is you trans guy right here, plenty of great Tourqueflight knowledge shared on multiple websites. Thanks DVW!

B&M is not the same anymore, I do not know who builds their transmissions or converters anymore
I did but the converter guy who built for many private labels died and business is closed- I tried to find where the tech guy went but no go so far
did I say call the Transgo techline and ask for a recommendation in your area?
sounds like you have some good leads and 727 is not electric and not rocket science
No secret that I like transgo- I grew up with those guys

Oh boy...sorry, I'm a novice here, so please bear with me! I am putting Sattelite, GTX interior in my '67 Belveder II. I've been collecting all the pieces for the last several years, ie front buckets, metal reinforcements for the bucket seats, rear seat, top of package tray plastic, center of rear seat chrome piece and emblem...and center console unit I took out of a Sport Fury from a Michigan junk yard 20 yrs ago, including all the linkage & brackets. I just cut the hole in the hump last night and will be welding in the console brackets and bucket seat reinvorment metal this weekend. My brother is dropping off the transmission that I plan on using tonight (it had been rebuilt by a reputable mopar guy a few years ago but has not been in a car since rebuild. So...what "Tabs" should I be looking for on the tailhousing? What do they do or why are they needed?
I have everything I need to put my car back together, sans a battery, starter and big block motor mount brackts...so, I now have a new concern I wasn't even aware of! I thank you in advance for any assistance!
