440 build to compete with Hellcat

There's a 70 charger near me with a 472 hemi, no rollbar or frame connectors. At a roadkill nights event... a guy in a new hellcat lined up next to the charger and preceded to say that those old cars were good back in the day but were nothing compared to the new cars. After the race the 70 charger owner got to ask the hellcat owner "what happened I never saw you". Lol ... the 70 runs 10s.

interesting points of view from all, my hellcat gets around 20mpg driving it like grama. and its stock at 707, with a tune, injectors, and believe a pulley change your at 1000hp. so with the hellcat swap you can upgrade it if you wanna race it or have a bad *** cruiser with 707 hp.

Abacus vs. Laptop, just build your Charger like you want it. Competition is in the eye of the beholder based on measured data. Even the faster car loses a race, alot of it depends who's behind the wheel! 440'

Its hard to compete with the possibilities of boosting a engine. The limits to 440 is the oem block. 800 hp is about it, you could push it past that periodically but eventually something will break. But you can step up to a aftermarket block and make huge power and still be cheaper then a hellcat build. Do something that you enjoy, working on bb mopars is something I enjoy, it is certainly fun to win...but...there is always a faster car out there with a insane amount of money invested in it.

The amazing thing to me with the late-model stuff is not only the giant HP numbers, but that they're
so dang quick while weighing the same (or usually MORE) than our old cars.
Late model Chargers and Challengers are over 4000 pounds, after all - and loaded with goodies.

Naw, what gets them so quick is a combination of state of the art engineering PLUS transmission gearing
superiority PLUS boost PLUS computer controls PLUS the EFI, etc. etc.

Say - has anyone tried installing that huge-assed blower off a Hellcat engine onto a 440? :)

Think about it. Late model; great heads, thin ring pack, fuel injection, great trans ratios, and boost. It’s very tough to out power boost. Fight fire with fire. A mild turbo 360 will get the job done.

Here you go. Here's a "hellcat range" 440.
I don't really know how much it cost to build because I didn't build it, it came with the car I bought as a unfinished project and only has 100 miles on it. I would guess $25k atleast. I know the BDS 8-71 blower and drive alone cost 10k and every other part on it is top notch. If you can live with the 8-71 you could drive it around but I know the hellcat gets atleast 2x the mpg.
If I were you I'd build a twin turbo setup on a Indy block and just go for it.

You can get hellcat engine/trans take outs for $10-12k now in occasion (I was dumb and didn't buy one within driving distance)
$2k more for controller.
I don't think you can build 700hp, a trans to take it, convertor, and elec controls on a bb for that.
Yes, most are advertising at $20-25k, but not all.

I like turbos and the pride in building them. If you like to build and drive, it can be a satisfying project. If you want turnkey, build a big stroker

Depending on just how fast you want to go and if you want to use a power adder like the Hellcat does ? That said my 63 Sport Fury has a mild 440/493 that I built just for the street. Its 10.6 comp with aluminum heads and has good .045 quench and a custom flat tappet cam to keep cyl press pump gas friendly as it runs and races fine on 92 pump. The car has run 10.70's @ 125 now at 3700 lbs without my 190 in the car. I built the eng myself and honestly have about 8k to 10k in all the parts and machine work and thats including $700 dollar headers and the $600 dollar exh from TTI. I drive it 45 miles to the track and run 10.80's on normal days and on good air days she dips in the 10.70's. Now thats about as fast as a stock Hellcat but I see no reason I could not put a 250 shot on it and dip in the high 9's if I wanted to. But I dont want to as I like it all N/A and am happy with it like it is and dont want to put the added stress on the eng. Just look at Mark Wise with his 500 stroker in his 63 Dodge as he has hit 10.0's with a 250 shot I believe. Course if you have to pay to have your eng built you may be paying about 20k to get a nice 400/440 stroker in the 600 to 700 hp range. Mine is low budget as I used the 440Source kit and got a good price on EZ aluminum heads and the Indy dual plane intake. My eng makes around 600 hp at the flywheel to push my almost 3900 lbs to 10.70's @ 125 so a good 700 hp in a good working car should be good for mid to low 10's at 3700 lbs without a power adder. It all depends on what you yourself can do and have to pay to have done. Lucky for me I have been an auto tech since I was in high school and I can build everything on my car but I still have to pay for parts and machine work. It can be done for sure as there are plenty of 400 and 440 strokers running 10's out there without power adders so with power adders 9's should be no problem. And then you can also consider boost and really make some power !! Ron
