Bourbon—The All-American Spirit

Looks like you need some help, help drinking all that bourbon! Lol 440'
You won't be short of help on this site. Bourbon has always been my go-to drink. Would love to taste some straight from Kentucky that you can't get anywhere else. By the way some just don't know it but if you don't own a quart of water when you're finished drinking and before you go to sleep you will not have a hangover. Good news oh, now you can drink more often!

Blended bourbon may contain colorings or flavorings or other spirits but must still contain 51% straight bourbon.

That should be down a quart of water!

Sorry but blends aren't Bourbons. They are whiskeys. Bourbon must contain 51% corn.

Bourbon must contain 51% corn and blends must contain 51% straight bourbon.
Why do you think they have the term, "straight" bourbon? Because there are blended bourbons. There are blended rye and wheat bourbons that are both 51% corn and 51% straight.

I enjoy a little bourbon now and then. I like Makers Mark and I really enjoyed the Old Forester that was recommended on the stop in for a drink thread. My brother had some Four Roses, I liked the taste but it had a little more alcohol burn.

If it's got Old in the name it's gotta be good.

Here ya go. Too many variables to list separately here on my phone.

My favourite spirit. We get a very limited selection up here in the wilds, so I’m always trying to learn more.
I enjoy discussing it with other enthusiasts but if they bring up JD for anything other then cooking with I will change the subject.
I really like JD, but since it isn't bourbon, this isn't the page for it. :)

Buffalo Trace
Gentleman Jack (not technically bourbon, but a fine Tennessee sour mash whiskey)
And my favorite...Pappy

I’ve been slow sippin’ this thing down for 3 years. Special occasions only.

Pappy's is actually made by Buffalo Trace, as is Blantons and E.H. Taylor. Different mash bills but same distiller.

Blantons is getting very hard to find. Pappy's is impossible. E.H. Taylor is actually pretty available and is excellent.

Yep. BT/Sazarerac has a bunch of labels that come from a few basic mash bills. The higher priced and harder to find bottles are barrelled longer or hand picked from sweet spots in particular warehouses. For instance, bottom shelf Weller is the same juice as Van Winkle is but the VW is hand chosen by the family and is aged a lot longer.

Thanks toolman. I knew Buffalo and Pappy were the same distillery, but that link educated me, and will be the cause of spending a lot more money, lol.

Even though Jack isn't a bourbon, it has it's own thing going on. It is filtered through a long tube filled with sugar maple charcoal to give it it's distinctive flavor.

They don't touch on blends.
A blend is different bourbons using a separate mash bill and then combining two or more bourbons to deliver the desired taste.
Note all bourbons used were made of 51% corn and aged in new charred oak barrels and aged for a minimum of two years.

Here's a BT blend I found. Their only one that I see. Not too popular (yet) with bourbon distilleries. There are a lot of craft distilleries blending sourced products to have a product to sell. It takes a lot of money and maturation time to produce your own product.
Buffalo Trace Mash Bill Blends
  • E.H. Taylor, Jr. 18 Year Marriage (blend of mash bill #1, mash bill #2, and wheated)

In fact, it could be said if it's not a single barrel bourbon it is a blend of different barrels from the same mash bill that could be of different ages.
