Im having the bearings my 8 3/4 489 sure grip diff replaced on my survivor 71 rr. Im debating on having the center section painted. What do u guys think? Currently the whole axle is rusty. Im leaning to no because it’s a survivor and trying to keep it as original as possible but on the other hand the paint will protect it.

In your case, I’d probably leave it be. Survivor, and all.

That said, the example that Wayne showed is more my style.

Or wipe it with old gear oil and throw a couple handfuls of dust on it. Poor mans undercoat.

I actually wiped mine down with gear oil after I blasted it, THE FIRST TIME. Sitting in the shop for part of the Summer had it rusting again so I blasted it again and cleared it.

I'd offer that coating it is a good idea. When I got a '65 housing for my '63 I got a powder coating kit and prepped it wire wheeling the surface down. Just seemed a good opp to do it while on my bench before installing it. The kit had a base prep solution and coating. It was all brush on. Almost 20 years later the surface is still fine, no chips, peeling, etc. and cleans up to its semi gloss black finish when I take the time to do this.

My housing is power coated and I painted the center section black, still black after 4+ years of driving!

No paint.

I would take it all apart. Clean it up with degreaser and then…. EvapoRust soak.

I painted my Axle housing red
and the differential semi-gloss black

On things I want to keep original looking but not rust further, I clean and spray with satin clear.

Cast coat gray on the Cuda center section.

But it's an unrestored driver and not a show car.
