Pontiac rods are 6.625"; Olds 455 6.73"; Cad 472/500 are 6.75". Those rods look aftermarket to me.

This piston....

I wonder if this was a condition where the top ring gap was too tight and once the engine warmed up, the ends of the rig butted and lifted up the piston ring land?

OK, at long last I have determined the connecting rods are 292 Chevy straight six rods. All three dimensions match, and they look the same in the details. Length of the 292 rod is 6.76. So if I did want to replace them with new remanufactured or NOS rods it would be fairly cheap. And they are a forged unit.
Now to solve the piston

I cleaned up the crank today. Journals all look great. The seal surface where the front seal rides is not so hot. Don't they have a repair sleeve for this?
can you guys tell if this is a forged or cast crank from pictures. I would imagine its forged,

Forged.
Seal goes around the damper not the front of the crank.
Not sure how all those marks came to be.

By all the holes in the crank the bob weight is significantly lighter than stock. That was probably as important in oval track as the 10% increase in displacement. Along with a healthy compression increase, polished rods this was probably a pretty well though out piece back in the day.

If memory serves me B.B chevy rods were used with the offset rod journal set up ...waaay back ????

Yeah they are 292 Chevy rods. I figured it out. I loaded it all up and took it to the machine shop. they told me those pistons would never last on the street. The rods are way long at 6.76 inches . and yes some BB Chevy rods might work . That's what I need is lightweight BB Chevy rods ( like 6.5) and some taller pistons. Those pistons are so short because the rods are so long
