The Greatest Space Prank in History belongs to American astronaut Owen Garriott.
It happened in 1973 aboard the U.S. space station Skylab. Garriott wasn’t just a brilliant astronaut—he was also a first-class prankster. And what he pulled off with a cassette recorder earned him a place in space folklore.
Before the mission, Garriott brought along a tape recorder. On it, his wife Helen recorded a few lines—part of a top-secret prank designed especially for flight controller Robert Crippen back at Mission Control.
One day, right before the usual daily check-in with Earth, the voice from Houston came through:
“Skylab, this is Houston. Do you read?”
Garriott stepped up to the transmitter, pressed play, and from orbit came a woman’s voice:
“Good afternoon, Houston. This is Skylab.”
Silence. Then a confused voice from Earth:
“…Who is this speaking?”
Helen’s voice replied:
“Hi, Robert. This is Helen—Owen’s wife.”
A long pause. Then Crippen, clearly panicked:
“…What are YOU doing up there?!”
Helen answered calmly:
“Oh, I just thought I’d bring the guys something to eat. Fresh and homemade.”
And then—radio silence. Total chaos at Mission Control. For a full minute, the room froze.
This remains one of the most legendary pranks in space history—a reminder that even in the vast silence of space, there’s always room for a laugh.
