DOGS

We forced the dogs to go to the beach today. They'll be sleeping soundly for quite awhile. Very few people out at 7. Love it. Zeke wasted no time in cooling off his junk.

Guess who is getting abused tomorrow? It always amazes me just how much fur gets knocked loose. When I take them for a walk on Friday, I'll be leaving clouds of bird/critter nest fluff out in the field after fluffing them up.

Tiny boy is 130 or so now. Beer was yesterday though. Mmmm. A decent Heff to wash down a BLT in which the B was actually Pork Belly.
Anyway...a PSA. We put the dogs on the Credelio Quattro flea/tick/worm med recommended by our vet. One of the potential side effects, which they test for prior to dispensing, is seizures. Lo and behold after the 3rd round, it's 1 per month, Zeke showed signs of getting hit with one. Scared, confused etc look on his face and how he comported himself. Luckily he was over the issue pretty quick. So...no more of that crap! Some time back we had a seizure dog, Lilly[ RIP], that was hit with those. Courtesy of that experience we know the signs of seizure onset with the kids. Watch out for this stuff homies!

Bad flashback there, glad he got over it, it’s scary to witness. When my last dog was getting towards the end I figured she may waste away to where I had to put her to sleep (simplified version of her issues), then one day while I was laying in bed reading with her glued to my hip she was hit with a seizure that went maybe 20 seconds, then started screaming and stumbled around like she was blind for a few mins. Rushed her to the vet and they agreed it was time to end it. Weird thing is I’ve seen a person have a seizure and it didn’t rattle me the same way.

From what a prior vet told us, when a seizure hits them, it leaves a tiny scar/burn/dead spot in their brain that never goes away. Once that happens, the clock is ticking. We had Lilly on Phenobarbital and Potassium Bromide? at first but it made her stoned and she still got hit with seizures. I found a botanical med that worked better, as far as being stoned, than the others but she could still get hit. We kept Valium on hand and there was another botanical med to use, both for when we saw it happening. Later on we got her on a more current, mainstream seizure med that worked even better. Don't remember what it is. I still think much of the seizure issue was diet related but no way to prove it. I was always watching her, when home and awake, to stop an onset. Sometimes she would get hit with seizure clusters. One weekend when I was gone, my wife was home, Lilly got hit with one that went for 10+ minutes. She didn't make it. I miss her terribly. When she was on her game, she was the Energizer Bunny. She too was one of our rescues. As far as we could tell, she was a Finnish Spitz which do have an issue with seizures. Before she passed, she knocked out one of her ACL's. The morning I was going to take her in for the repair, I stepped out the front door to get the paper and she took off after a Rabbit. Courtesy of that she had to get both ACL's done. When I brought her home from the vet after the repair, I carried her into the house since she was splinted up on both rear legs. I needed to get her dog bed ready but couldn't do it since I was holding onto her. I got it as good as possible with my feet, then quickly set her down to finish. When I went to put her on the bed, she was walking around on her front legs with her butt in the air. One tenacious pooch! She refused to let anything slow her down.

My mother was given a toy poodle Jamie by my sister. He had run in the street he ran into the side of a moving car. He was knocked out and had a little blood coming out of his mouth. My sister took him to the Vet, had a severe concussion. This was before my mother was given to her. About 6 months after he was with my mother he had a seizure lasted 5 mins. He had seizures occasionally for the rest of his life. Had to put him down at 15 years old.

My Lord Budnicks (RIP 2014), was 16 years 4-5 months
his like 12 old -13 years it was ugly, he was a happy dog though
he had almost like 'epileptic type seizures'
he'd lay on his side, sort of stretch out, all of a sudden start twitching shaking
& then claw out, sort of tremor or shake & whine a lil' bit
like he was totally confused, of what was happening to him...
It was really hard to see, then he'd pee a lil',
then roll back on his stomach, sort of sit up
wake up like as if nothing ever happened, wagging his tail ready to play...
I'd wipe up the pee & go on with life....
Vet then, they gave him some prescription, don't remember the name
but honestly made hi just sleep or it made it way worse
so I quit giving to him...
I'd just pet him & talk to him when he was seizing/spazzing out
try & comfort him...

I was at wits end, didn't want to put him down
he was great/normal when not seizing like once a week or so

my dad would ask whats happening to him I tried to explain it
& just said; he's dying dad, having seizures I can't control...

After talking to my older sister Lori,
I started him on some liquid Horse ligament meds, 32 oz bottle 'a cap full'
in his water, mixed in about a gallon of water daily, lil' less than an ounce per. day
(horses take way more & drink way more)
Carrow (sweet) & chondroitin (spell ?), glucosamine, MSM, 1500mg per oz.
don't remember what else etc.
My sister a large animal Vet/VDM (now in Or.) recommended for his hips & joints
it worked like a Mirical drug, he was spry as hell, happy, playful
& no sign of pain at all, prior he was reluctant to play or go for long walks
whine when getting up etc.
(lil' to no seizures either, 1-3 or so per year)
He was going up & down stairs & walking way better, like he was 7-8 or something
he was on it for the last 3-4 or so years, from like 12 on
it is the only thing I could attribute to his change, it took about 6 months
but it was night & day differences...

I wish I could remember the name, I bought it at Tractor Supply,
green/grey tall 32 oz. bottle $35, with a horse on the front, with the squeeze dispenser
neck on the top...
