Putting my console togeather for my 69 GTX. Carpet for sides is straight forward. But how does the rear console carpet get installed?? Any alignment tips? What is the purpose of the vinyl on the ends?

I watched a video on YouTube where the guy wrapped those vinyl-y end pieces around the black steel end piece before bolting the end piece back onto the rear of the console. The vinyl parts were glued onto the inside sections of that black end piece with weatherstripping adhesive and were secured when it's bolted back onto the plastic console. It seems odd to me that those vinyl parts aren't even visible when installed, but that's how I did mine.

The vinyl flaps are probably meant to be the strengthening pieces behind the metal plate fixing screws.

The carpet would just tear away from the screws in time.

I think the vinyl tabs cement to the bent metal returns with the screw holes. I think the vinyl may just peak out of the assembled unit kind of like a divider between the carpet and the console plastic - but that may depend on how well the carpet piece was made. I know I had to use a strong glue and clamp the vinyl tabs solidly to the bent returns just so it would stay in place place long enough to hold while I assembled it. Basically what Coelacanth said.

Thanks to all for the tips. Glued it on this morning and sandwiched the vinyl area between the metal bracket and console screw hole area. Looks pretty good. Will see how it fits and looks once the floor carpeting gets done
