A little more time away from the car than planned but back at it. Car sat for five months while I wrapped up stuff around the house. In that time, I had some flash rust show up and knew I would need to strip off some of the paint off around the areas Bob was welding at since the paint was affected by the heat and alterations needed. But as I started really looking at what I had I noticed there was a fair amount of fill primer popping off the epoxy. Like in chunks not just little flakes. I had seen this on edges and thought it was just from nicking the edges. But now much more pronounced. After researching and talking to the paint store people figured I had a fill primer to epoxy primer bonding issue that seems to be not equal across the car after some testing. But not confidant my testing was sound I decided to take almost all of it down to metal. This was another one of those things that was troubling me in the back of my mind but didn’t fully register or maybe didn’t want to know.

From my conversations with the paint store people looks like my painting environment (not enough air flow – dry paint landing on the wet paint), amateur ability, and timing (close to the 7-day window) all played into it that the fill primer not bounding all that great. Relying on the chemical bond only has not fared well for me. The guy that will probably paint the car recommended going away from the PPG stuff, since in his opinion it’s designed for quick action (one paint type right after the other) which I can’t do most time due to life. He recommended going to UreChem paints. For their epoxy you have a couple of day window for chemical bond for the next paint to bond or wait for it to fully cure, sand, and then paint with the fill primer. I called and talked to them to confirm that. More work but way more my speed and comfort level of having a mechanical bond. Price is far less than PPG as well. Web orders only but free shipping over $400 I believe. After sanding and media blasting a good chunk of the car down, I applied the epoxy yesterday. Came out pretty nice. Easier for my amateur ability as a painter to get a decent laying of the paint. Probably did too much area stripping down to metal with the summer humidity rolling in so I’ll work on smaller areas as I move forward before painting. Got a better fan and built a shroud around it to get better air flow. Worked out pretty good.

Yes, a setback and have to redo all the body work I’ve done, but all for the best. I’m actually feeling ok about is since I now know what I did wrong, hopefully others can learn from that, and I’ll have a much more solid paint base. Rather fix it now than have the paint coming off the car for the rest of my life…. Was talking to the Owner of DMT a couple of years ago at his shop picking up an order. He has an issue with his car in that while installing all the parts on the car the paint was cracking. It all needs to be redone since something went wrong, he says. Don’t wish that on anyone. Let the grinding begin…..

Well in the last two weeks I fixed my deck lid filler panel width issue by adding some 12 gauge material to each end. I’ll have the body shop finish it off. Installed the trunk hinge supports, package tray, plenum, and deck lid filler panels. Welded in all these pieces and finished off welding in the quarters, tail, and rear valance. All is welded in now except for a few minor brackets and such. Normally I’ll grind as I go with a panel but this time I just kept installing and welding. All temporary braces and roof supports are removed. Now I’ll pick up some grinding supplies and hit it all with the grinder. Progress pics below.
