Go back to stock ignition and don't start chasing your tail. The factory ignition is an excellent one. Been used for decades on millions of cars.
Was the racers choice for years before all the HEI and different electronic ignition stuff hit the markets.

You just need to connect the ground to the dash frame then. The ashtray is just attached to the dash frame.
What is the other end of the ground wire attached to ?
Where is the speedometer getting its power?
The engine should be grounded to the block and body.
The ground cable should have a stub that goes to the radiator support and there should also be a ground strap between the bellhousing and the firewall.
Here is the obvious question. Did you check the battery yet ?
Never charge the battery in the car either. Charging creates hydrogen-sulfide gas. Can be explosive and is very corrosive.

Disconnecting the ground wire while the engine runs does not always indicate a "good" alternator. Some of the diodes could still be bad.
Battery must be completely charged before any testing.( with a battery charger, not the alternator)
Needs to show at least 12.5 volts static before load...
