Left side under the tin flap just inboard of the rocker panel. Check behind the left kick panel trim for a connector. Trace the supply voltage from the switch output connector at the steering column. Do you have a FSM?

I have one of these to sell. Only used a couple of times. I used the exhaust bungs so, you will need a couple of them. I will include the power board I constructed too. PM me for price.

The OEM seal is probably leather and could be dried out from sitting/old age (like some women I know). I like the leather but the newer plastic style is also available.

I have not researched it but, I think just a replacement/swap to a electronic voltage regulator would provide the stable output recommended for the electronic ignition. I you want more alternator output- go to the square back alternator with matching regulator.

Wire it to something else on the engine or maybe a rubber tarp strap to hold it still?
The holes in the manifold can be tapped for pipe plugs to seal.
