So the remote turns on a relay when you press a button, a latched setup.
How do you start the vehicle? (this needs to be momentary so I don't think this will work as desired)

That's just a common sense measurement. I don't think there is a specific measurement. I think 1/8" is too close and 1/4 is too much. You want a gap but not too close. The TO bearing on the fork is not precise. There is a lot of play and movement. You don't want the bearing touching the fingers...
I put a wireless battery shutoff in my van. It's under the hood but unless you know what you're looking for, you would miss it. If it ever fails, I can simply take it out of the circuit and move on. Do need to carry an adjustable wrench and a screwdriver. Keeps driveaway thefts down. Tow trucks...
If you are changing springs you can add a 1/2 inch spacer between the front spring hanger and the body, which will give you more clearance at the front fender corner.
I did that on my A body, and there was enough engagement on the slip yoke that it wasn't a problem.
