The real issue was an air leak between the heads and intake.... quick easy fix
Others will know better than me, but a wire smoking is finding a short to ground. I would try disconnecting possible components one at a time and retry from there, starting with the alternator.

Im with ya....nobody likes a raw deal, but my statement stands.....5 months is too long to try it out and see if it works....there are other possibilities beyond their control. Its not really their fault you are on the other side of the world...
I had one, it worked great. However, i have to admit.....I have more fun personally driving the car myself if you know what i mean. There are many gadgets for consistency, that take a lot of fun out of the run.
Id say that coil is bad news by the looks of it, and there should have been a claim as soon as you saw it. But the real lesson here is that you CAN NOT wait five months to try it out and then start complaining. The seller is not going to sympathetic after that long.
