I rebuilt the valve in my 62 300 the same way except I used Aluminum or steel pop rivets after removing the shaft / pin from the rivet. You will have a flange on the rivet body to work with.
This add a leaf helper springs were installed at the bottom of the spring pack - i.e. - closest to the ground. The ones on my car had replaced the OEM "short" leaf.
I took out a set of helper springs from my 64 Polara. Dropped the back end close to 1 3/4 inches. They're cheap and summit lists them under item #13120-1
Just did this conversion on my 64. Unbelievable difference. Listed below are the units I used. I went with these lenses because they ALMOST resemble the stock glass units. The only difference is that the replacements are not quite as convex as OEM.

They were for sure. My 300 with a 413 had only 29k when I got her and that's when the Carter fuel pump was installed. One k later the fuel pump rod was toast. My Polara with a 426 wedge, had only about 4 k on a complete rebuild. Carter pump was added at rebuild. According to previous owner...
I'm wondering if this issue might be related to the Carter M6903 fuel pump. Both my Polara and my 1962 300 have these pumps, and both cars had the same fuel pump rod issue. Both rods were OEM units. I've done some reading on these pumps and there are a lot of issues with higher than advertised...
Get a professional appraisal. If you have a claim you want to insured for the right amount. An appraisal should protect you in case of a claims dispute rather than just agreeing on an agreed amount with the insurer. An agreed amount may end up causing grief if the insurance company has a change...
