Pulled a stupid move. Now I have to pay for it.

Are you using factory stamped valve covers? Any stamped covers, even aftermarket ones, will dent at the bolt holes after a couple gasket replacements. Folks can't help but overtighten them installing the covers or trying to stop leaks. Cork crushes under the bolt and gets thin or pinched in...

    Gas washing pistons?

You will usually only notice fuel wash upon tear down. That being said, the fewer miles you drive the less it will affect the engine. Carburetors are not exact 100 percent of the time. There will be liquid fuel in the cylinders a good bit of the time on the best tuned carb, especially during...

    Pilot bushing removal

Cheap bar soap like ivory works great in place of grease for thinner mopar bushings. Much denser than grease, won't just squirt out.

New 440 problem - help please!

Inspect the spaces between each lobe. Sometimes there will be a small high spot in the raw cast space between the lobes that is not noticed during the machining process that catches the edge of the lifter that can temporarily stop or reverse lifter rotation or even damage the lifter face.

    What to do?

Looks very much like improper break in on the cam. There is one other problem that can cause large sections of the cam to wipe like that but I don't see any evidence of that. I purchased a 69 buick lesabre two door to build for my wife. Tore down th engine, and found that both heads were cracked...

    400 strokerbuild -> torque

Keep the stroke to 4.25 or less in order to avoid going to external oil lines for the oil pickup. Avoid the kit that requires the support ring for the oil rings. It's an extremely short piston with the oil ring groove crossing the wrist pin area. It's fine for racing and short trips but expect...

    What to do?

Couple those with a decent ported head, you get the sound you wanted and a decent upgrade in power. As far as an intake, the Torker II is a pretty close match to the RPM intake, but shorter in height.

    What to do?

The comp cams mutha-thumpa cams are similar in design to the hughes whiplash. They're designed with the lower compression engines in mind, with maximum duration and lift with the least amount of overlap possible to maintain maximum cylinder pressure. Very radical sound and maximum performance...

    383 Build questions

Square decking the block and using thinner head gaskets (MLS), along with a box stock set of 440 source "Stealth" closed chamber heads will give you a significant bump in compression with the stock piston. The new stealth heads will be cheaper than just refurbishing the old heads much less the...

H beams are lighter and stronger is why.

Cracked cylinder head, did I do it or flaw?

Going out on a limb to say the crack has been there a long while. It was just exacerbated by the stud installation (the permatex didnt help, multiplied the pressure via hydraulics.) As far as the machine shop goes, most shops only inspect the deck and intake surfaces when magnafluxing. Some only...

Heater core EXPLOSION.... Water pump bypass hose???

Sounds like you need a better radiator cap. The bypass hose just keeps a minimum flow through the water pump and heater core when the thermostat is closed. The cap should have relieved the excess pressure WAY before the heater core gave up. Will have to say that the new heater core had quality...
