68 may have used both a threaded post and a splined push-on type as well. My original had the splined version and I got tired of the mirror falling down onto the console, so I found a screw-on in a junkyard many years ago and just replaced the post. Problem solved.

Pretty sure the slider was a 68 only tray.

Try to keep the covers warm by letting them sit out in the sun or by applying heat in moderation, especially when using new foam.

Wonder when that changed. My 68 had the plastic button since day 1.

The button looks to be adjusted a little deep. Loosen the set screw and spin the knob until the ribbed part is more flush with the housing. Set screw should be at 6 o'clock.
