68 may have used both a threaded post and a splined push-on type as well. My original had the splined version and I got tired of the mirror falling down onto the console, so I found a screw-on in a junkyard many years ago and just replaced the post. Problem solved.
The button looks to be adjusted a little deep. Loosen the set screw and spin the knob until the ribbed part is more flush with the housing. Set screw should be at 6 o'clock.
Has anyone dealt with Paul's near Pittsburgh? I sent them some pics of my plates for an online quote. Should be interesting finding out what it will cost.
