Cool car I'm partial to 68 RRs, I have one now too
had 8 of my 13 RRs were 68s, my 6th silver A4 car was the fastest
8.58 @156 383/479ci (0.40" over 4.15" stroke) alum. galore
heads (ported RPMs 2005-ish) rad, w/p housing, elct. w/p, trick 6bbl & later a single 1050
on a 300hsot N2O, thru 3" mandrel Flowmasters Delta Flow (heavy, glass A12 lift off hood
4.10:1 gears (3.90:1 didn't slow it much if at all) or maybe 4.30's too much rpm on freeway
tried a bunch of different ones, 4.10 was the best of both worlds
custom 4,200 stall rev. MVB 727tf, 315/65R15 M/T (pretty much worn out)

not my fastest car by any stretch but was one of the fun-est to roam the streets
of Sacramento Co. (Rancho Murieta area) from 1997 to 2007 when I sold it to a buddy

Looks great! I raced a 68 Road Runner throughout the '70's in the Spokane, Washington area. I missed it so bad that I just bought a '70 Road Runner project car that I am working on daily. I am restoring it and plan to do a pro mod with it ready for racing. It was partially restored but I want to make it perfect so I am sanding every bit of rust out of it. It had the new panels and floor welded in and I added wider wheel tubs and relocated springs to accept my 48" shortened Dana 60 rear end. I love Road Runners.

My '68 Road Runner had a fiberglass hood which I made in 1970, was lightened to 2,690 pounds. It was a 383 (bored .60 over), 4 speed crash box, which I made myself grinding every other gear tooth out. Lakewood scatter shield, 8 3/4" rear end with 4.30 pig installed with welded spider gears. I had 4.11, 4.30, 4,56, 4.89, and 5.29 pigs all set up to change if I changed set-up. I was not stupid enough to buy or own the 5.29 but I borrowed it once. My best time at Spokane Raceway Park 2,350' above sea level, was a 10.54 and I backed it up with a 10.44 the same day. I wish I knew what is was factored for sea level. Foolishly, I switched to a front engine dragster because I kept breaking axles in the Road Runner. We bought a burned up dragster that had a 426 hemi in it and rebuilt it with a full body, and put a USED 440 with aluminum rods, gear drive, Hilborn fuel injectors, roller cam and an electrically shift manual torqueflite, which caused me to lose on a regular basis. My best time with the Dragster was 9.44, only one second faster than my Roadrunner! I blew it up in the traps in qualifying at the 1978 World Finals and the tattletale needle on my Stewart Warner 4 to 1 manual tach read 8,150 RPM. I still have one Mickey Thompson aluminum rod and piston to remind me. The dragster was "AMPHETAMINE ANNIE" as was my Road Runner.
I am now restoring and building a 1970 Road Runner with a 440-4-speed plus a Dana 60 and I have along way to go. I am doing it myself and I just turned 80 in February. At this pace, it will take a long time!

If you have never driven a front engine dragster and had the engine blow up as you were going over 150 mph. it is an experience that I will never forget. All of the debris as well as the oil and fuel hits you in the face. I had goggles and a helmet as they did not have face shields back then. When I build my current 440 I am going to keep it under 7,500 RPM period and I will use Carrillo Rods or some other high performance rods. I am still going to use a gear drive but I am going to use aftermarket bearing rocker arms. My rocker arm geometry was way off as I kept bending push rods. I have learned quite a bit since then as we now have the internet and organizations like this to obtain information. I want to thank every single one of you for the help I have gotten.
