1964 Belvedere - Were Rear Seat Belts Standard in 1964??

I'm reassembling my 64 Plymouth and purchased new seat belts for the rear. There is no provisions on the floor to bolt them in though.. Were rear seat belts not standard in 64 or was it an option? The holes are there for the front ones but not the rear on this car. The floor pan is original.

It's weird that you don't have any provisions for them. My 63 Chrysler didn't come with them, but when I checked under the carpet, the provisions were there.

I believe they weren't standard till 67.

You are right as that was a option in 64. My 64 did not have factory belts but did have rubber plugs in the floor for the FRONT.They were threaded .The rear has dimples where you can drill for the thru bolts. My 65 came with front and rear factory belts.

That makes sense Darter. The dimples are there. I'll have to find out which dimples to drill out now. I mini tubbed the car as well so will have to determine the general location to attach the outer belt still.

Well, for all you youngsters (lol) I purchased by 1963 426 Max Wedge Lightweight BRAND NEW in 1963 (I was 21 years old then) and it did NOT have rear seat belts.The car was a 2 Door Hardtop Belvedere Aluminum Front End Factory Race Car. 1 of 11 built as a 2 door hardtop. Don't ask me why I ordered a hardtop rather than a Savoy 2 Dr Sedan...I just thought it looked nicer.

Same here, my 63 Dodge didn't have rear belts or mounts for them.

My 65 Belvedere has no provision for rear belts; only fronts.

My Belvedere has front and rear seatbelts, looks like they are 64 factory.

My 62 Fury came with rear seatbelts. The rears are located where the dimples shown in your picture. Deereman

I'm sorry that I can't provide a better photo but the one of the bracket for the muffler hanger,you can see the reinforcement washer right below it. The other photo showing the rear housing, to the right just above the front spring eye you will just be able to see the reinforcement washer.These are aftermarket belts.and I tried to duplicate the factory placement using my 65 Belvedere as a guide..I tried to make the photo larger but suck at computers.

I didn't think front seat belts were standard front or rear in 64 at least not before Jan 1, 64. My aunt (lived next door) bought a new 64 Galaxie 500 and it didn't have any seat belts in it at all. Then when the law passed that all cars from 64 up had to have them, she had to retrofit it to pass state inspection later that year. I remember this very well because she bitched about it pretty good. She barely had the money to get the car let alone upgrade it and it was a stripper as it was. 390 V8, 3 speed on the tree and no power anything and not even AC and this was the (still is) Houston area now lol. My cousin (her oldest son) bought a new 63 Pontiac Catalina with 389 Tri-power with a 4 speed. That car was my first good ride in something fast . It had PS (not sure about PB) but it too had no AC and don't remember it having seat belts either. If it did, they were tucked away. The things people did back then to afford cool cars lol

Agreed, 67 was the first year for everyone all though Chrysler did have them in many 66 models.

My `66 ...'seating for six', but came with seatbelts for four. I would add center belts, but have not come across any hardware for sale that matches (the male ends have two holes vice one).

Talk about seat belts being all over the board in 64! Very interesting to say the least. So back to my Plynouth, being minitubbed, the usual mounting location is no longer there now that the tub has been moved up against the frame rail. This leaves me having to bolt to the tub itself and I'm not sure that's gonna happen.

Being that there were no rear seat belts in 64 would a guy still be required to install them? I'm thinking about the event of having the boys in the back seat and getting pulled over.

If no rear seat belts, may want to reconsider having the boys unrestrained in the back seat, pulled over or not. It's just a safety thing with kids in the back.
If retrofitting the rear seat belts, you would want to reinforce the bolt holes like the factory did.

Even with minitubs, you most likely will have to modify the rear seat so moving the belt mounts over a bit shouldn't be that much of a problem and like, 65hemi said, reinforce the floor for them.

My 64 Belvedere has never had rear belts, but has front belts that look stock.
