1968 Charger Gas Tank Leak

A couple of things. I received the OEM lock ring I purchased off eBay. The aftermarket one that was on the car is actually thicker (aftermarket is the clean one). Isn’t the whole purpose of the OEM lock ring that it’s thicker? Also the last picture is of the lock ring before I took it off the tank. Is this on correctly?

You have to spin the ring to the right until the little bump on the lock ring sits under the raised area on the tab. It’s hard but if you lube it up and use a tool, it will go.

Well hell, no wonder the tank was leaking if I didn’t even have the lock ring engaged completely. I don’t have a “tool” though? Do I have to use a specific tool or is there something else I can use?
